Thanks for supporting ‘Mermaid’

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Jay County community (and beyond) for its amazing support of Jay County Civic Theatre’s recent production of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.”

It was that community support that made this musical Civic’s most successful theatrical production in its 40-year history, with a total attendance of 1,388 over the course of its five-show run.

The local Gamma Alpha chapter of Psi Iota Xi bought into Civic’s vision for bringing “The Little Mermaid” to the stage by providing, over the course of 2016 and ’17, the financial means to underwrite the vast majority of the royalty fees, which represents the single largest cost of producing live theater. They also provided the volunteer ushers, refreshment hosts and refreshments for the four originally scheduled shows. There are not enough words to express our appreciation for Psi Iota Xi’s commitment to and support for the arts, and, particularly, this show.

Our sponsors were quick to associate their name to Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” by supporting the production, as well. Thank you to Portland Veterinary Clinic, Dynamic Business Solutions, Buffalo Wings & Rings, Williamson-Spencer Penrod Funeral Home, Pak-A-Sak, Cruise Planners, Country Creek Primitives and Briskets & Butts BBQ Supply. Without the support of these sponsors, Civic’s dream of bringing such a huge production to life would not have been realized.

Attendees were also treated to such colorful and eye-popping costumes on stage because of our several costume sponsors: Dairy Queen, Valentine Feed & Supply, Adams Physical Therapy, Arm’s Auto Body, Moser Motors, Bollenbacher & Associates, Spencer Apartments and REMC, along with in-kind sponsors Patriot Sportswear, Coca Cola and Cruise Planners (and at least two anonymous sponsors).

The Commercial Review and WPGW both provided promotion beyond Civic’s paid advertising. Their support was immeasurable. Thank you also to Slim Fisher Entertainment for recording the show for Civic’s archives, as well as for providing a fun manikin challenge for the audience and cast on Sunday.

While Civic rents Arts Place for its productions, Arts Place and its staff always go above and beyond. Rehearsals are numerous and lengthy, requiring extra hours being open and late evenings for its staff. Arts Place also purchased advertising space in the program and on the video, providing further financial support to Civic Theatre. It also managed all of the ticket sales for this record-breaking production, no small feat in and of itself.

West Walnut Church of Christ also allowed us the use of its fellowship hall, sanctuary and additional rooms for auditions and the early weeks of rehearsal. John Jay Center for Learning provided space, as well, during those early days. Thank you to both.

To the parents and guardians of the huge cast, who drove, waited, supported, encouraged, assisted, then drove and waited some more, and helped drive the ticket sales to record numbers, thank you. Many also helped make costumes, built and painted the set and watched the youngest merfolk in the green room.

Our huge cast and crew, many of whom performed on stage for the first time, committed their time, talent, passion and love of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.” They gave their hearts and souls to the show for eight full weeks. Then they enthusiastically agreed to add the Saturday matinee, a fifth show in one weekend, to their exhaustion. New friendships were made as they developed into a family, which was evident backstage, in the green room and life beyond rehearsals and performances.

And again, thank you to the greater Jay County community for attending and supporting the show. Live theater is only possible when you come to watch and enjoy … and you came and enjoyed in record-setting numbers the last weekend of April, selling out three of the five performances, and coming within 15 and 17 seats of selling out the other two shows. That translates to 1,388 attendees out of a possible 1,420.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Jason McGraw, Jan Rittenhouse, Ric VanSkyock, Ray Cooney, Jeni Hummel, Jennifer McGraw, J.B. Goodrich, Greg Rittenhouse and Pete and Lisa Vogler
