FORT RECOVERY — Guidance counselors from Fort Recovery High School and Fort Recovery Elementary/Middle School presented updates to the school board on new programs they have implemented this school year at Tuesday night’s meeting.

Amy Kaiser, high school guidance counselor, discussed the implementation of new career portfolios to help students consider career options and prepare for college applications.

Mandy Muhlenkamp, elementary and middle school guidance counselor, presented peer conflict resolution techniques and overviewed a new bullying investigation form utilized by teachers and staff.

Kaiser showed school board a pair of folders utilized to help students plan for their futures. The first, a career file folder, is given to students when they enter middle school and used to store information on different career options and interests each students has.

“We tried to make this appropriate developmentally to where they’re at,” Kaiser said, emphasizing the career folder wasn’t intended to pigeon hole students into a career path at an early age.

The second is the career portfolio, given to students entering ninth grade. The portfolio is kept at the school until students’ senior years, and is used to store information on service hours, academic achievements, career resources and other information that is important for students to have when applying for college or seeking employment after graduation. Kaiser said using class time once or twice a year to update the portfolio allows students to stay on top of recording their accomplishments, and helps students think about their post-high school plans.

“I’m really trying to make an effort to help make sure the kids keep their stuff organized,” Kaiser said.

Muhlenkamp discussed efforts at Fort Recovery Elementary/Middle School to teach students techniques to deal with peer conflict and help teachers and administrators identify substantiated incidents of bullying.

Three steps are taught to students in fourth, fifth and sixth grade to deal with conflicts between classmates. First, a student should ask themselves if they can ignore behavior, and if not they should ask individuals to stop the behavior that is bothering them. Once they’ve tried the first two steps, if the behavior hasn’t stopped, they should speak with an adult about their issue.

Muhlenkamp also showed the board a new school bullying investigation form utilized by staff. The form includes a checklist of actions to take regarding a bullying investigation, and specifies three necessary factors that would identify bullying as opposed to less severe conflicts between students.

“Bullying is a very serious behavior. And it’s a very specific behavior,” Muhlenkamp said. “We have to be careful when we’re disciplining bullying, that it actually is bullying.”

She explained that over-diagnosing negative behavior as bullying could damage the response to actual cases of bullying, which are flagged by three specific factors: It is a repeated act, it includes an imbalance of power and it is intentional.

School board members Mitch Ervin, Jose Faller, Mike Grube, Aaron Guggenbiller and Ginny Fortkamp also heard an update to the previously presented five-year financial forecast from treasurer Lori Koch. After new forecasts for tax revenues were released by the state of Ohio, Koch said projections were adjusted to take into account lower than expected income tax revenue and an increase in state revenue.

In other business, the board:

•Hired Shelly Overman on a two-year contract as a non-teaching employee, Barb Alig to work in the high school office and also work with special needs students and Austin Faller at a rate of $12.85 per hour, not to exceed 800 hours, to help with information technology at the high school.

•Approved the following: continued membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association; a one-year contract with West Central Ohio Assistive Technology Center; the addition of financial literacy and college and career readiness courses for seventh and eighth graders;

•Accepted the resignation of Peggy Siefring as a classified aide;

•Terminated its membership with Mercer County Local Professional Development Committee.

•Accepted donations of $306 to SADD from Fort Recovery Academic Booster Club and $100 for Get Real Week from Fort Recovery Community Club.

•OK’d contracts for the following coaches: Kurt Rammel (athletics director), Brian Patch (girls basketball), Chelsea Rogers (volleyball), Brent Niekamp (football, weight room), Kylee Moody (cross country), Matthew Kerns (boys golf), Joe Bruns (girls golf), Mindy Bubp (swim), Travis Guggenbiller (JV volleyball), Carly Staugler (freshman volleyball), Kevin Eyink (assistant baseball), Toby Metzger, Kirk Link, Tyler Wuebker and Greg Stoll (assistant football), Todd Bevington (assistant cross country), Miranda Muhlenkamp (middle school girls basketball), Kevin Eyink (middle school football), Donna Bates (middle school volleyball), Cody Fiely, Craig Garman and Greg Kahlig (assistant middle school football).

Also approved were contracts for the following high school advisors: Courtney Wilker (football/basketball cheerleader advisor), Victoria Horstman (art club, sophomore class, yearbook), Francis Reid Knuth (color guard, band), Patricia Lefeld (drama, scholastic bowl), Amy Kaiser (Future Teachers Association), Robyn Armstrong (math-science club, LPDC Core Committee), Janice Osterloh (National Honor Society), Melinda Luthman (newspaper), Julie Billenstein (SADD), Julie Schlater (Spanish Club), Kathy Schwieterman (freshman class), Joe Hawk (FFA), Michael Gower (vocational agriculture), Rogers (student council), Niekamp (senior class) and Kerns (Future Business Leaders Association).

Also OK’d were the following elementary/middle school advisors: Carol Ranly (book club), Crystal Fullenkamp (science fair), Jessica Jutte and Carrie Kahlig (student council), Marcia Weigel (yearbook), Ashley Dakin (football and basketball cheerleading), Maura Gavit (vocal music), Michelle Stammen (student council), Tami Brunswick (third grade book club), Abby Scheidt (fourth grade book club), Jocelyn Meyer (fifth grade book club), Patch (eighth grade class) and grade level chairs Cathy Wendel (kindergarten), Kari Eilerman (first), Julie Winner (second), Sandy Raffel (third), Robert Heitkamp (fourth) and Laura Snyder (fifth).
