FORT RECOVERY — Michael Bashore took a year away from coaching.

But he was never too far from the game. Every night he checked the scores, both of his former Greenville Green Wave and Versailles Tigers teams.

Then his wife, Elizabeth, suggested he pursue an open position.

The former Southwest Ohio Division I coach of the year found a home in Fort Recovery.

Bashore was unanimously approved as the next Fort Recovery High School boys basketball coach at a special school board meeting Monday night.

“I’m awful excited to be here with the tradition,” Bashore said. “Playing in the (Midwest Athletic Conference), it can’t get any more exciting than that as far as I’m concerned. The MAC is probably one of the best conferences in the state of Ohio and I’m looking forward to jumping in and being in battles every Friday night.”

Bashore, who will become the 16th coach in program history, did not coach last season but spent the previous four years at Greenville. The Green Wave had a 53-39 record with him at the helm, including a Greater Western Ohio Conference championship during the 2014-15 season. It was the first conference title for the Green Wave in more than six decades.

During the same season, Bashore was conference coach of the year, District 9 coach of the year and Southwest Ohio Division I coach of the year. His team set a school record for wins in a season with 18.

“He brings a lot of experience,” said FRHS athletics director Kurt Rammel. Prior to coaching in Greenville, Bashore spent five years on the staff at Versailles. “He knows the ins and outs of the MAC, he knows the ins and outs of the teams we play with the experience he brings and familiarity he has with Fort Recovery was key into what we were looking for.

“Mike has done some great things in his career and we’re happy to have him in Fort Recovery and on the sidelines.”

A father to 5-year-old son Isaac and 3-year-old daughter Sophia, Bashore replaces Chris Guggenbiller, who coached the Indians for the last three seasons. The 1992 Greenville graduate inherits a program that has won back-to-back Division IV sectional titles, and this past season lost to eventual state finalist Lima Perry in the district final.

“You don’t go anywhere and win without great kids,” he said. “I’ve been blessed … everywhere we’ve been we’ve had fantastic kids. They’ve bought in to what we were teaching and I was very fortunate for that.

“Just kids that want to work hard and that is one of the trademarks at Fort Recovery as well. The kids want to work and I’m looking forward to the same kind of success here.”

Bashore said he hopes to play a fast-paced offense and stress strong defensive play, a staple of Guggenbiller’s recent teams.

“I like to get after it defensively,” he said, noting he’ll get to meet his team on Wednesday. “I like to run. I like to get out and run. I think anytime you can get easy baskets it makes it easier on you.

“We’re excited. We will play great defense, whether that’s a zone or a man. I take pride in playing defense. That is what wins championships.”
