Overcorrecting

A Pennville man struck a pole with his car Wednesday night.

Mahlon K. Neuenschwander, 37, 6150 N. 550 West, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was traveling south on county road 550 West when his 1996 Volkswagen Passat traveled through standing water in the roadway. He lost control of the vehicle, which went into a ditch before hitting a utility pole.

Damage in the 5:20 p.m. accident is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.



Turkey struck

A Portland woman struck a turkey with her car Wednesday morning.

Staci R. Keen, 44, 1686 W. 350 South, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was traveling west on county road 400 South when a when a turkey entered the roadway. Keen said she could not avoid striking the animal with her 2007 Ford Edge.

Damage in the 7:40 a.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 to $2,5000.



Disregarding stop sign

Two Portland residents’ cars were damaged Wednesday afternoon when they collided at the intersection of North and Ship streets.

Shelby E. Smith, 24, 528 W. High St., told Portland Police Department she was traveling west on Ship Street and stopped at the stop sign at its intersection with North Street. She said she then attempted to proceed through the intersection and her 2002 Chrysler Concorde struck the side of a 2005 Chevy Malibu that was traveling south on Ship St.

Mallary N. Elly, 27, 521 N. High St., said she was unable to stop to avoid the collision because of wet pavement.

Damage in the 3:50 p.m. accident is estimated between $5,000 to $10,000.



Scheduled changed

Because of Memorial Day on Monday, the trash pick-up schedule will be changed for Geneva next week.

Trash will be collected on Thursday, June 1, instead of Monday.
