Supporters excited about change

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

The recent announcement that the Portland Farmers’ Market would move to the corner of Meridian and Race streets follows months of discussion and planning.

The move fulfills a long-time Nancy Cline dream. Nancy is the new manager of the market. She and her late husband, Carroll Cline, have been significant Farmers’ Market vendors for many years, and the move fulfills a vision of an expanded market and is a tribute to Carroll.

The move has been made possible by support from Community and Family Services manager Andy Glentzer. The new location will enhance visibility of the market and assure that it will be open rain or shine.

In the event of rain, indoor space will be provided in the former Ken Kunkle dealership building.

The market will kick off the 2017 season from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

While produce, crafts and baked goods will be available every week, there will be a special emphasis on crafts on the fourth Saturday of each month.

The origins of the market are sketchy but can be traced as far back as to 1965 or earlier. The market has come and gone in several locations.

In a day when “farm to table” marketing of many locally grown items has become popular, it is exciting to see the enthusiastic support of the vendors who make it all possible.

The two of us have been involved with Farmers’ Market for many years and wish Nancy Cline and all vendors well as progress occurs.
