Readers say thanks for coverage
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Dear Mr. Jack Ronald, Mr. Ray Cooney and Ms. Jeanne Lutz and the staff of The Commercial Review, thank you for producing and publishing The Commercial Review, a newspaper which makes us proud of Portland, Indiana, our new hometown.
We appreciate The Commercial Review, a publication we can read with interest from beginning to end.
Portland is very fortunate to have The Commercial Review. In comparison to the many small-town and large-city newspapers, we believe The Commercial Review is the best. The paper’s variety and scope, ranging from international to national to local news, demonstrates its excellence. The Commercial Review presents a positive spirit of growth and service, truly reflecting the community of Portland, Indiana.
The news section contains truly newsworthy stories covering a broad spectrum of interests. The local news is relevant to residents of Portland and surrounding areas.
Here are just a few examples from Oct. 27 to 30:
•The agricultural coverage is helpful and interesting to all residents. The articles headlined “Be careful this hunting season,” “Ag-related fatalities …” and “…corn husker finishes first” are thought-provoking for towners as well as farmers.
•Sports news, features and photos promote community pride andspirt . The front-page story “Taking the mat” about Jay County High School cheerleaders competing in the Indiana Cheer Championship and the headline and photo “Heartbreaker” are examples of excellent photography, in which the picture tells it all.
•The opinion piece on former University of Dayton coach Archie Miller at Indiana University is representative of the high standards of editorial policy to include positive and thoughtful editorials and columns. The Garrison Keillor column — ending with “the gentle people shall prevail. Count on it.” — was spot on. “Take time to enjoy the outdoors” was offering great advice.
•The business section shows pride in Portland’s growth and development. “LED investment paying off big explains the money-saving and cooperative project, “Power moves” with a photo of Brad DeRome, Chad Dodd of Jay Schools and Mark Arnold of Jay County REMC.
•The classifieds and local business advertising in The Commercial Review help us, as new residents, to find reputable merchants and services. The newspaper’s coverage and notification of communityevents, reflects a culturally active, vibrant and socially involved town.
Thank you to The Commercial Review for accurately presenting Portland, Indiana, as a welcoming and wonderful place to live.
