Capsule Reports
Theft
Several electronic devices were reported stolen Monday from the Budget Inn north of Portland.
According to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office, two TVs, valued at $100 each, a camera valued at $1,000 and a cordless drill were taken from rooms in the motel at 1411 N. U.S. 27 sometime Sunday evening or Monday morning.
The theft was reported at 7:28 a.m.
Drove off road
A Portland couple was involved in a single-car accident Monday afternoon while arguing in the car.
Madelene E. Hoose, 29, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was driving south on U.S. 27 near its intersection with Indiana 18 and was arguing with her boyfriend, Isaiah Patton, who was sitting in the passenger seat. Hoose said Patton became angry and grabbed the steering wheel, pulling it to the right, causing Patton’s 2002 Pontiac Montana to drive off the road into a cornfield. Patton then attempted to drive his car back onto the roadway, but it got stuck in a ditch.
Patton told sheriff’s deputies he was arguing with Hoose, but grabbed the wheel because a car was coming at them and Hoose was not paying attention. He admitted to steering the car once it entered the cornfield.
Two young children were also passengers in the car at the time of the accident.
Patton was arrested on the preliminary charges of neglect of a dependent and criminal recklessness, both Level 6 felonies, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor.
Damage in the 4:21 p.m. accident is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
Trees struck
Two Jay County residents were involved in vehicle collisions with downed trees and limbs after Sunday’s storms.
Blake A. Smith, 19, Dunkirk, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was driving east on county road 200 South just past its intersection with county road 1100 West on Sunday night when he saw tree limbs in the road that had fallen during the storm. He was unable to avoid striking them with the 2004 Dodge Stratus he was driving. The vehicle is registered to Susan C. Smith, same address as driver.
According to a sheriff’s office report, the road was closed at the time and Smith drove around the warning signs before hitting the tree limbs.
Damage in the 7 p.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Early Monday morning, Christopher J. Hudson, 24, Portland, was driving west on county road 500 South near its intersection with county road 300 West when he saw a tree that had fallen into the roadway.
