Jay County girls first at Norwell Invitational
Senior Alex Bader helps in four of team’s five victories
OSSIAN — The Patriots earned hardware to begin the season.
Jay County High School’s girls swim team won five races Saturday as it finished first in the Norwell Invitational.
The Patriots scored 268 points to win the team title as it returned to the meet for the first time since 2012. Host Norwell was a distant second with 229 points, and Oak Hill was third with 209 points.
South Adams totaled 129 points for fifth.
Alex Bader, a JCHS senior, won two individual races and helped two relays to victories. She took the top spot in the 100-yard butterfly in 1 minute, 0.03 seconds, and touched the wall in 1:07.02 to win the 100 breaststroke.
She joined Elizabeth McDowell, Vivienne Kunkler and her sister Eliza Bader to win the 200 medley relay, and teamed with Ashlyn Dow, McDowell and Kunkler to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.67.
Dow claimed the other JCHS victory, finishing ahead of the field in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.68 seconds in her high school debut.
South Adams junior Ashley LeFever won the 100 freestyle in 54.68 seconds for the only SAHS victory.
Other top-eight individual finishes for Jay County included Erica Hathaway (sixth – 200 freestyle, sixth – 500 freestyle), Ashlyn Dow (seventh – 200 freestyle), Eliza Bader (second – 200 individual medley, third – 100 backstroke), Vivienne Kunkler (third – 100 breaststroke, sixth – 200 IM), Lilly Clemmons (fifth – 50 freestyle), Rieley Brewster (fourth – 100 butterfly) and McDowell (third – 100 freestyle, seventh – 100 backstroke).
Finishing in the top eight for South Adams were Olivia Von Gunten (third – 200 IM, seventh – 500 freestyle), Isabel Von Gunten (third – 50 freestyle) and LeFever (second – 200 freestyle).
