East Jay boys edge South Adams for title
BERNE — The Chiefs won the title by the slimmest of margins.
East Jay Middle School’s boys cross country team edged host South Adams to win the Allen County Athletic Conference championship on Saturday.
The Chiefs had two finish in the top 10 on its way to 62 points, one point ahead of the Starfires. Adams Central was third with 77 points and West Jay totaled 117 for sixth.
South Adams’ girls won with 33 points, ahead of Adams Central (63) and East jay (107). West Jay (128) was sixth.
Cameron Clark of East Jay was second overall in 11 minutes, 9.87 seconds, to lead the Chiefs. Tony Wood (11:27.08) was seventh, Tyler Manor (11:48.76), placed 15th, Dustin Harris (12:06.58) was 18th and Sebastian Solis (12:12.8) was 20th to complete the team total.
Race Anderson of South Adams was the individual champion in 11:00.14. Owen Wanner (11:19.15) was fourth, Brady Fox (11:34.55) finished ninth, Isaac Gorrell (11:46.36) placed 13th and Oscar Vasquez (13:00.8) crossed the finish line 41st.
Aaron Funkhouser was the lead WJMS runner as he finished 11th in 11:41.32. Trenton Alexander placed 14th in 11:47.51, Gage Baker was 26th in 12:30.78, Skyler Bee crossed 33rd in 12:45.07 and Logan Zimmerman finished 38th in 12:52.85.
The South Adams girls had all five of its scoring runners place in the top 10. Mckenzie Sturwold (12:42.47) was second as Mia Singleton (12:55.77), Nia Litwiller (12:55.81) and Addisyn Hunley (12:59.62) were sixth through eighth respectively. Elizabeth Gerber was 10th in 13:02.
Lydia Keihn led East Jay with her third-place time of 12:12. Mara Bader was two spots behind in 12:39.81. Lindy Wood had a time of 12:47.54 for 25th, Olivia Waters finished 36th in 14:16.19 and Savanna Hamilton placed 38th in 14:23.16.
Raven Weaver was the top WJMS runner as she placed fourth in 12:37.24. Lizzie Dollar (13:12) finished 13th, Makinsey Murphy (14:02.8) was 30th, Aubri Hatzell (14:10.97) placed 32nd and Madison Oliver (15:06.7) ended in 54th.
