The name Jay County Hospital will continue to exist until at least Feb. 28.
In a memo to employees Monday, CEO Dave Hyatt announced that the transition date for the hospital to integrate with Indiana University Health has been moved back to March 1. The original goal had been to make the move on Feb. 1.
The memo to employees also included the hospital’s soon-to-be new name — Indiana University Health Jay, Inc.
After both the hospital and IU Health on Aug. 24 signed a letter of intent to integrate, a timeline was set that included completing an integration agreement by early this month, holding a public hearing by the end of October and finishing up the process by the end of January. But on Oct. 13, Hyatt reported that the process of ironing out the details of the agreement was taking longer than expected. At that time, the hope was that the Feb. 1 date could be met despite those delays.
“It’s just going through the due diligence,” said Hyatt. “It’s taken us a little longer than we’d hoped to go through the contracts. … It really is crossing T’s and dotting I’s.”
The initial letter of intent set up a framework for the agreement, including that IU Health would assume all hospital assets and liabilities and invest $12 million in “integration activities and preliminary facility improvements.” IU Health Jay would be governed by a new nine- or 11-member board, which will include all seven current board members, for three years before falling under the umbrella of IU Health’s east central region board.
Over the last two months, Jay County Hospital and IU Health have been working on the details of the agreement based on that framework.
Jay County’s hospital board, commissioners and council are scheduled to meet in a joint executive session at 5 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the hospital board’s regular monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m.
Once the agreement is complete, it will be made available to the public at Jay County Courthouse. Hospital administrators will also hold town-hall style meetings with employees to explain the details of the agreement.
A public hearing is expected to be held in November as well.
In order for the integration to move forward, the agreement will need to be approved by the hospital board, county council and commissioners.
