Capsule Reports

One injured

A Portland man was hit by a car Friday afternoon in Portland.

Brett A. Stevens, 38, was in an argument with his girlfriend, Shana M. Overby, 33, Portland, when she decided to leave to go to her mother’s house. Overby got in her 2000 Chevrolet Blazer and was driving south on Franklin Street, away from the residence at 804 N. Franklin St., when she turned into a driveway to turn the vehicle around.

Overby told police that she then put the car in reverse, back out of the driveway and quickly changed gears back into drive. As the Blazer lurched forward, Overby saw that Stevens was laying on the ground. He had been struck when Overby was backing up the Blazer.

Stevens was treated by first responders for a shoulder injury, and as of Monday morning he is not a patient at Jay County Hospital.

Damage in the 1:17 p.m. accident was estimated under $1,000.

Improper turn

A rural Portland woman and a Portland man were involved in a two-vehicle accident Sunday evening northeast of Portland.

Courtnee S. Taylor, 23, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was stopped while facing south at the intersection of county road 300 East and county road 300 North, when she failed to see a westbound 2000 Dodge Ram on county road 300 North. Taylor began to turn her 2011 Chevrolet Impala east onto county road 300 North when the vehicles collided.

The Ram, driven by John M. Taylor, 37, traveled off the south side of the road and into the ditch, while the Impala spun around and was thrown off the north side of the road.

Damage in the 6:55 p.m. accident was estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.

Tree struck

A New Castle man struck a tree with his vehicle Sunday evening northwest of Portland.

Zechariah Sell, 24, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was driving a 2006 Ford Focus south on county road 550 West, just south of the intersection with county road 650 North, when he was distracted and drove the Focus into the ditch. The car traveled off road until it struck a tree, coming to a rest on the east side of the road.

Damage in the 6:15 p.m. accident was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.

Thefts

A pair of thefts were reported in Portland over the weekend.

Larry Cavanaugh reported a theft to Portland Police Department after finding the garage door of his shop at 610 N. Commerce St. open on Friday morning. When he checked to see if anything was missing, Cavanaugh said his mitre saw had been stolen. Police are still investigating the incident.

Portland Police Department was also called to Walmart on Friday for a possible theft. Police arrived and arrested Trevor Easton, 24, Redkey. The man was found with food and baby items valued at about $295. Easton was arrested and booked at 5:21 p.m. Friday into Jay County Jail on the charge of theft by borrowing, a Class A misdemeanor, and is being held there on a $1,000 bond.
