Join the academy and be informed

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Are you one of those who sits at the local café or even at home and bad mouths our local police department?

Maybe you’re the one who knows better than our local officers? Why don’t they arrest those overdosing on drugs?

Are you an authority on the drug problem? Are you really interested, or do you just need something to gossip about?

Portland Police Chief Nathan Springer has organized classes to begin this fall, but because of lack of interest they have been canceled. However, next spring the classes will be held.

Those of us who are already members of the Portland Citizens Police Academy Alumni will be going to the local restaurants and even knocking on your doors to sign you put to take the police academy classes.

Until you attend the citizens police academy classes and know what officers go through to attend training and agility test just to get a thankless job, you don’t have any right to criticize them.

The classes include information on how the police department works, the drug and alcohol problem, riding with an officer on his or her shift, taking a tour of Jay County Jail and going to the shooting range to learn how to protect yourself and your family.

You probably don’t know, but the Portland Citizens Police Academy Alumni gives a scholarship each spring to a graduating senior going into law enforcement.

At Christmas time, the officers, reserves and the Citizens Police Alumni takes 20 children shopping followed by a party at Portland Fire Department. A child always likes a cup of hot chocolate, a cookie and a visit from Santa. The police officers take their personal time to volunteer with the Shop with a Badge program along with the reserves and alumni members.

Did you attend the National Night Out? If so, the hot dog you ate was provided for and prepared by the citizens police academy alumni members. The bottled water you drank was donated by Jay County Sheriff’s Office.

Those are just a few of the events we members take part in.

Don’t you want to be an informed part of our community?
