BERNE — Kallee Patch was out front from the start.
Wyatt Miller chased the leader for the first mile but later found himself in first place.
They both finished there.
Patch and Miller claimed the individual titles Saturday and Patch led a dominating effort as the host South Adams High School girls cross country team won the team championship in the Allen County Athletic Conference meet.
“We knew coming in that we had a pretty good shot,” said SAHS coach Clint Anderson, whose girls squad totaled 21 points. “We’ve done fairly well against these teams this year.”
Heritage was the runner-up with 96 points, two ahead of Adams Central. Jay County totaled 144 points for seventh.
In the boys race, Heritage scored 39 points for the team championship. South Adams, which had the top two runners and scored 44 for second, and Woodlan totaled 101 for third. Jay County was seventh with 129.
Patch worked her way toward the front of the group shortly after the start. A few meters behind her were two of her teammates, Olivia Von Gunten and Eliza Harruff, Woodlan’s Abby Gentz and Jay County’s Sophia Fugiett.
As the race went on, Patch did nothing but extend her lead over the field. Meanwhile Fugiett, a freshman, sat fourth as the Starfires occupied four of the top five positions.
Patch crossed the finish line in 20 minutes, 17.01 seconds, exactly nine seconds ahead of runner-up Von Gunten. Fugiett made up one spot, placing third in 20:30.44. Haruff (20:40.79) was fourth and Megan Miller (20:51.17) ended fifth, giving SAHS four top-five places.
“Kallee ran well,” said Anderson, whose team’s last title came in 2015. “She obviously loves to run on this course. Both races this year we’ve ran here she’s taken it out to a really fast start, gotten a lead, established herself and kept it.
“She looked pretty good today.”
Calyssa Lehman (21:30.51) and Hadi Hawbaker (21:38.61) were ninth and 12th respectively to earn second team All-ACAC honors.
First through seventh places are given the first-team nod, while eight through 14 make the second team.
Fugiett was the lone all-conference representative for Jay County.
“She’s worked hard all season,” he said. “Has her good pace down. I know she sticks with the second and first-place girls. As a freshman, she’ll be a force to reckon with, especially in conference and sectional, in the coming years.”
Fellow JCHS freshman Miranda Alig was 17th in 22:09.39, and their classmate Lita Chowning finished 37th in 24:57.90. Ella Roessner (26:46.32) was 47th, and Elizabeth McDowell (28:51.3) ended 49th to complete the Patriot team score.
Miller took a different path to his individual championship. Near the first mile he trailed Devin Schmenk of Heritage. Miller took the lead in the second half of the race to win in 16:55.97. Victor Vasquez, a SAHS senior, also passed Schmenk to finish second in 17:09.48.
“Feels great,” Miller said of his victory. “I wasn’t really expecting to win, but as soon as I got a lead I started working to win it. My second mile was actually slower than usual, but on the third mile I felt like I had more energy than I usually did. I started picking it up more and that’s when I sealed it.”
South Adams freshman Clancy McIntire was ninth in 17:59.67 to earn second team All-ACAC honors. Also scoring for the Starfires were Trey Lehman (15th – 18:30:35) and Kam Yoder (17th – 18:38.47) and Luke Gerber (28th – 19:28.35).
Alex LeMaster of Jay County finished 20th in 18:51.52 as the Patriots’ No. 2 runner, and Tayler Smeltzer was four spots behind in 19:05.58. Mitchell Winner (20:17.44) was 37th and Mason Winner (20:52.71) finished 41st.
Running for South Adams but not factoring into the team total were Isabel Von Gunten (16th – 22:01.03) and Acacia Anderson (32nd – 24:06.27). Catherine Stafford of Jay County was 51st in 29:15.52.
Also running for the SAHS boys were Luke Gerber (28th – 19:28.35), Dario Banuelos (36th – 20:03.83), Aidan Von Gunten (44th – 21:07.23) and Korbin Dunnuck (53rd – 22:40.91). Xavier Myers (42nd – 20:55.28), Matthew Minnick (45th – 21:14.74), Candler Hedges (49th – 21:49.25), Nathanael Day (50th – 22:04.16) and Dyllan Harris (55th – 23:30.53) also competed for Jay County.
