Zane Shreve, Abbi Dunlavy and Emma Laux were once part of the same track team.

Last weekend they were once again competing in the same meet, but for three different institutions.

The three former Jay County High School athletes all participated in the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational on Saturday at University of Cincinnati.

Shreve, a 2014 JCHS graduate and senior at Miami University, had the best finish of the group as he was ninth in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 10 inches. He was also 11th in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.12 seconds, and finished 18th in the long jump at 18 feet, 9.25 inches. He was also second in discus with a throw of 99 feet, 2 inches.

Dunlavy, a senior at Fort Wayne (formerly IPFW), finished 25th in the 800 run in 2 minutes, 35.04 seconds. She also had a time of 5:47.93 as she was 43rd in the 1,500 run.

Laux, who is a sophomore at Butler, helped the 4x100 relay team place ninth in 4x400 relay. Along with Madeline Miller, Julia Kracht and Carson Fields, the quartet had a time of 4:06.73.

Laux was also 21st in the 400 dash in 1:01.85.



Collin Affolder

South Adams – 2014

Recorded singles in back-to-back games for the Bethel College baseball team during a three-game set against Mount Vernon Nazarene.

He had one hit in five at-bats Friday in the second game of a doubleheader. He also walked once and got hit by a pitch as the Pilots outlasted MVN 9-7 in 12 innings. Affolder walked in the first game.

The following day, Affolder was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI with a walk as the Pilots (10-18, 2-10 Crossroads League) fell to Mount Vernon 7-6.

Affolder was hitless on Monday in a 4-0 loss to Taylor.



Katelin Augsburger

South Adams – 2017

Struggled pitching on Friday as the University of Saint Francis softball team lost the second game of a doubleheader to Spring Arbor, 10-2.

The freshman threw five innings, gave up seven earned runs on 10 hits with one walk and struck out five.

Spring Arbor scored once in the second inning and three times in the third. Augsburger had clean fourth and fifth
frames, and was charged for three of Spring Arbor’s six runs in the sixth inning.

The former Starfire fell to 3-6 on the year with a 4.85 ERA in 39 innings for the Cougars (12-13, 5-7 Crossroads League).



Simon Brumfield

Jay County – 2017

Threw for the Wabash College men’s track team as it competed in the Wittenberg Tiger Invitational on Friday.

Brumfield was 19th in the hammer throw with a distance of 94 feet, 7 inches. He was third in his flight after getting his best distance on his third throw.

In discus, the freshman was also third in his flight with a distance of 94 feet, 1 inch, and with that value he finished 22nd.

Rose-Hulman won the 12-team invite with 188.5 points, while Brumfield and the Little Giants were second with 108 points.



Kyra Braun

Jay County – 2016

Helped the Trine University women’s tennis team edge Adrian 5-4 Monday.

Braun won her No. 5 singles match over Sara Anthony 6-2, 6-2, as the Trine Thunder and Adrian Bulldogs split the six singles contests.

At No. 3 doubles, Braun teamed with Katie Simon to defeat Makayla Jorgensen and Julia Maltbie 8-3 as the Thunder improved to 1-1 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.



Kyle Selvey

Jay County – 2014

Scored a run for the Huntington University baseball team Monday in a 7-0 victory against University of Saint Francis.

The senior entered as a pinch runner for catcher Hunter Losekamp.

It was the sixth run of the season for the former Patriot, who is hitless in five at-bats this year for the Foresters (8-12, 6-0 Crossroad League).
