BERNE — The Starfires have been ranked as one of the top teams in the state.
They keep proving they’re worth the rating.
The South Adams High School baseball team moved to 3-0 on Tuesday with a 10-0 victory over the Canterbury Cavaliers.
South Adams (3-0), which is ranked fourth in Class 2A by the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association, scored twice in the bottom of the first inning, and put the game out of reach with six runs in the third inning. They added two more in the home half of the fifth to finish the run-rule victory.
Grant Besser and Terry Dawn both had a double and a single to lead the Starfires, who also got a pair of hits from Joe Stuber. Collin Shaffer had a double and two RBIs, as Nic Stuber and Besser both drove in a pair of runs.
Shaffer tossed four innings to get the win. He allowed one hit, struck out six and walked three. Besser struck out all three batters he faced in the fifth.

COLDWATER, Ohio — The South Adams softball team scored 13 runs in the fifth inning Tuesday en route to a 16-8 victory over the Coldwater Cavaliers.
The Starfires (2-0) took a one-run lead in the top of the second before the Cavaliers tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the home half of the fourth.
But that’s when the Starfire offense struck for its best inning of the season as it sent 16 batters to the plate. The inning was capped by a one-out grand slam from Isabella Ramirez. South Adams had six consecutive hits in the inning.
Coldwater responded with a five-spot in the same inning before both teams scored a run in the sixth.
Kayla LeFever had a triple and three singles, Jenna Myers notched a double and two singles as Tori Raugh and Ramirez also had doubles. Emilie Hamill contributed three RBIs.
Stars sweep Northfield
WABASH — South Adams’ girls tennis team swept the Northfield Norsemen on Tuesday, 5-0.
At No. 2 and No. 3 singles, Julia Grabau and Hannah Dull didn’t surrender a game in getting their victories. Grabau beat Macie Sears 6-0, 6-0, while Dull defeated Chloe Miller by the same score.
Haley Gerber, the Starfires’ No. 1 singles player, knocked off Sidney Prater 6-3, 6-3.
Breanna Potts and Katrina Fosnaugh combined to beat Katy Pefley and India Shear 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 2 doubles team of Jade Farlow and Cassie Yoder rebounded from a second-set loss to beat Kelcie Thomson and Erin Whestone 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
SA beats Jay
The South Adams junior varsity baseball team used a nine-run sixth inning Tuesday to beat host Jay County, 14-3.
The Starfires (1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and never gave it up. They added three runs in the top of the fourth before Jay County (0-2) struck for two runs in the home half of the frame. South Adams added a run in the fifth inning before exploding for nine in the fifth. The Patriots got one back in the same inning but got nothing else.
Luke Yoder led South Adams with three hits, while Aaron Timmons, Christian Summersett and Alex Gorney each had two hits. Gorney led all players with three RBIs.
Cameron Henry was the lone Patriot to have a multi-hit day as he finished with two singles.
