Capsule Reports

First in three

Jay County High School’s academic team took first place in three disciplines during its final Eastern Indiana Academic League meet Wednesday.

Mary Hartman was part of two of the victories, joining Julia McClung, Caitlynn Miller, Catherine Stafford and Ava Stockton to take the top spot in English. She teamed with Evan Jackson and Liz Stewart for first place in fine arts.

The other victory came from the duo of Dillon Muhlenkamp and Ethan Andreshak in science.

The interdisciplinary team of Emiley Bailey, Andreshak, Hartman, Jackson, Muhlenkamp, Stafford and Stewart finished in second place.

Jay County will compete Tuesday in the Academic Senior Super Bowl Regional at Richmond.



Drove off road

A Portland woman’s car struck a utility pole early this morning.

Jackie D. Alig, 54, was driving north on Meridian Street and was approaching its intersection with Race Street. Her 2002 GMC Envoy went off the west side of the road, striking a utility pole at the intersection. Alig told Portland Police Department she didn’t know why her vehicle left the road.

Damage in the 6:20 a.m. accident is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.



Pole struck

A Pennville man’s truck hit a pole Wednesday, causing it to fall onto a building at the Jay County Fairgrounds.

Paul D. Gregory, 47, pulled up in the grass next to a building to begin unloading cargo at the fairgrounds, 806 E. Votaw St, Portland. The rear of his 1993 GMC C6000 slid in the wet grass and hit a pole, which fell onto the Industrial Building.

Damage in the 11:30 a.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.



Deer struck

A Fort Recovery woman’s car was damaged when she struck a deer Wednesday night.

Kendra J. Vaughn, 25, was driving east on county road 500 North near its intersection with county road 450 East when a deer ran out into the road. She was unable to avoid striking it with her 2010 Ford Edge.

Damage in the 9:26 p.m. collision is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.



Dumpster drugs

Portland Police Department recovered marijuana plants from a dumpster at Family Dollar.

The manager of the store at 703 N. Meridian St. contacted police about a man rummaging through the dumpster. When the department responded, officers discovered 10 to 15 marijuana plants, all about 3 feet high.

The man who was looking through the dumpster is not a suspect.

Police will dispose of the plants.



Theft

A Portland man reported his trailer missing, then recovered, Wednesday.

Jack Wall, 4501 S. Boundary Pike, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office his John Deere flatbed trailer was missing from 50 E. 500 South, Portland. He later reported that he had located the trailer.

Vandalism

A Portland man reported Wednesday morning that his car had been vandalized overnight.

Devin Johnston, 1237 N. U.S. 27, Lot 67, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office his 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer had been spray painted pink. His car had been parked by his residence since 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate.



Deer struck

An estimated $1,000 to $2,500 was caused when Portland man struck a deer with his car Sunday.

John R. Engle, 74, was driving west on Indiana 67 near its intersection with county road 700 South when a deer ran out into the road around 9 p.m. He told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was unable to avoid hitting it with his 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee.



Vandalism

A Portland resident reported that his mobile home had been vandalized Sunday.

Leon Ernst, 4180 E. Treaty Line Road, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office someone had broken a window to the home to gain entry. Nothing was reported stolen.

These area residents were recently fined in Celina (Ohio) Municipal Court.

Theresa A. Muhlenkamp, 54, Portland, $35 for speeding; Anthony T. Merrill, 18, Fort Recovery, $23.50 for a stop sign violation; Charles K. Hofstetter, 57, Geneva, $75 for a stop sign violation; John A. Witt, 42, Bryant, $132 for speeding.
