In his first three years as a Pilot, Collin Affolder went deep three times.
He’s surpassed that total in his final collegiate season.
Affolder, a 2014 South Adams High School graduate, launched his fourth home run of the season on Friday as he collected four hits for the Bethel College baseball team in a doubleheader split with University of Saint Francis.
Affolder was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run in game one, a 12-10 USF victory. He doubled in the top of the first inning to give the Pilots a 1-0 advantage, then hit a solo home run, his career-high fourth of the season, which gave Bethel an 8-5 lead.
In the game two, which Bethel won 14-11, Affolder was 2-for-5 with a triple, his first of the season, and a walk.
Affolder raised his batting average to .314 (fifth on the team), and pushed his season total to six doubles, 21 RBIs and 15 walks. The Pilots are 12-22 and 4-14 in Crossroads League play.
Kyra Braun
Jay County – 2016
Went 2-2 in a pair of contests for the Trine University women’s tennis team.
On Friday during a 9-0 loss to Hope College, Braun dropped her No. 5 singles match to Bailey Chorney 6-0, 6-1. Then in her No. 3 doubles contest with Katie Simon, they fell to Erin LaBarge and Natalie Rahrig 8-2.
Four days later, the sophomore rebounded with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Olivet College’s Nicole Losey. Braun and Simon knocked off Taylor Robbins and Sydnie Weller 8-1, as the Thunder beat Olivet 8-1.
With the split, Trine moves to 10-8 on the season and 3-3 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.

Competed in four events for the Miami University men’s track team on Saturday in the Miami Duals it hosted.

Shreve’s best finish came in the 110-meter hurdles as he was seventh with a time of 16.46 seconds. He had another top-eight finish in the pole vault, as his height of 3.9 meters was eighth.
The senior was also 10th in javelin throw (37.17 meters) and 17th in discus (33.6 meters) as the RedHawks picked up wins against Morehead State, Wright State, Central State, Cleveland State, Bowling Green and Cincinnati.
Chandler Ingle
South Adams – 2014
Struggled in his last two appearances for the Goshen College baseball team.
On April 12, he started for the Maple Leafs and only lasted four innings. He gave up seven runs — six earned — on seven hits, including three home runs, with two strikeouts and one walk in a 10-2 loss to Indiana Wesleyan.
Ingle tossed 1 1/3 innings of relief on Tuesday in the Maple Leafs’ 14-4 loss in eight innings to Marian. The senior let up four earned runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout, as Goshen fell to 16-21 (9-11 Crossroads League).
Drew LeFever
South Adams – 2016
Placed fourth in the shot put for the Taylor University men’s track team at the Ball State Challenge on Friday.
The sophomore had a distance of 51 feet, 5.5 inches on his third throw of the preliminary round. He wasn’t able to improve during the finals. Austin Hogan of Indianapolis was first with a distance of 57 feet, 6 inches.
LeFever was also 12th in discus (132 feet, 1 inch) and 18th in hammer throw (126 feet).
Emma Laux
Jay County – 2016
Ran for the Butler University women’s track team on Saturday in the Illinois State Redbird Invitational.
Individually, she was eighth in the 400 dash. She was first in her heat with a time of 1 minute, 1.66 seconds. The sophomore also ran the first leg of the Bulldogs’ 4x400 B relay with Eli Landis, Emma Bailey and Julia Kracht to place sixth in 4:13.74.
The Bulldogs totaled 82 points for third, behind Illinois State (334) and Dayton (138).
Simon Brumfield
Jay County – 2017
Participated for the Wabash College men’s track team in the Indiana Division III Championships on Saturday at DePauw.
The freshman was 26th in discus with a throw of 99 feet, 1 inch. He also placed 29th in hammer throw with a distance of 92 feet, 1 inch.
The Wabash Little Giants won the team title for the sixth consecutive year, totaling 203 points to finish ahead of Rose-Hulman’s 130 points.
Sydney Robbins
Jay County – 2016
Earned a top three finish for the University of Saint Francis women’s track team on Saturday at Huntington University.
The sophomore was third in the javelin with her distance of 89 feet, 6 inches, which she accomplished on her final throw. Huntington’s Brooke Saylor won with a distance of 103 feet.
Huntington scored 120 points to win, edging St. Francis by one point.
The senior was also 10th in javelin throw (37.17 meters) and 17th in discus (33.6 meters) as the RedHawks picked up wins against Morehead State, Wright State, Central State, Cleveland State, Bowling Green and Cincinnati.
