Unemployment numbers continue to be low in Jay County and across the state.
The local unemployment rate dropped by 0.5 percentage points in March to 3.4 percent according to estimates released Monday by Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
Unemployment in Jay County has now been below 4 percent for seven consecutive months and 11 of the last 12. The March 2018 number is 0.5 percentage points lower than at the same time the previous year.
The rate statewide was 3.3 percent, which is down 0.4 percentage points from February. Of Indiana’s 92 counties, 78 had unemployment rates lower than 4 percent last month.
LaGrange and Elkhart counties tied for the top spot on the list for the third month in a row, each coming in at 2.2 percent. Dubois County had the next lowest rate at 2.3 percent.
Vermillion County again had the highest unemployment rate in the state at 5.6 percent. Lake County was next at 5.1 percent.
Area unemployment rates are as follows:
Adams County: 2.5 percent, down 0.3 percentage points, tie-fifth lowest.
Blackford County: 3.6 percent, down 1 percentage point, tie-27th highest.
Delaware County: 3.8 percent, down 0.5 percentage points, tie-20th highest.
Jay County: 3.4 percent, down 0.5 percentage points, tie-37th highest.
Randolph County: 4.0 percent, down 0.7 percentage points, 14th highest.
Wells County: 2.8 percent, down 0.5 percentage points, tie-21st lowest.
