Drive carefully, and enjoy the show
Editorial
Welcome back.
The garage sale signs are out. The golf carts are cruising. And the weather forecast looks great for the 53rd Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Association Show at the Jay County Fairgrounds.
All of that combines to complicate the lives of local residents, but any inconvenience is minor when weighed against the opportunity to host tens of thousands of visitors over the course of a few days.
So here are some tips for getting the most out of the busiest week of the year:
•If you’re a local resident and have never gone to the engine show, by allmeans go. You’ll see things that will surprise you, things that will puzzle you and things that might prompt a little sentimental nostalgia.
•If you’re at the show, don’t be afraid to ask questions. The exhibitors love their machinery, and they’re almost always ready to share their enthusiasm with others. Don’t know what something is? Ask.
•If you’re an out-of-towner, the same rule applies: Don’t be afraid to ask. You’ll find local residents and public safety officials helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Don’t know how to safely get across town in a golf cart? Ask.
•Wear comfortable shoes and pace yourself. Some of the most interesting things at the Tri-State show are on its distant perimeter. That can translate into a long walk on a warm day, so be sure to hydrate.
•Above all, be careful. Side streets are crowded, and folks are distracted. So put down thecellphone , focus on the traffic around you and drive defensively. — J.R.
