Several homes in Portland will be demolished as the city continues its work to remove blighted houses.

Portland Board of Works selected bids for the demolition of three area houses at its meeting Thursday.

Board members also approved three bill adjustments.

Two of the buildings up for demolition — one at 961 S. Bridge St., the other at 130 E. High St. — were obtained through a tax certificate sale at no cost to the city. The other home, 305 Blaine Pike, was purchased for $11,000 at November’s board of works meeting. Because of its proximity to the Salamonie River, the property could be useful for future flood mitigation projects or wastewater treatment plant improvements.

The board received bids from TJ’s Concrete and Excavation and A-Landon Excavating for each of the properties.

TJ’s bid $9,650 to demolish 961 S. Bridge St., $5,900 for 305 Blaine Pike and $5,850 for 130 E. High St.

Landon Excavating bid $6,800 for 961 S. Bridge St., $8,000 for 305 Blaine Pike and $7,000 to demolish 130 E. High St.

Board members Jerry Leonhard, Bill Gibson and Portland Mayor Randy Geesaman voted to select the lowest bid for each house.

TJ’s was awarded the jobs for 305 Blaine Pike and 130 E. High St., while Landon Excavating will demolish 961 S. Bridge St.

Also on Thursday, the board approved a handful of bill adjustments.

MSSL Wiring had switched the name on its utilities account from JCI, but ended up being assessed the minimum monthly charge under each name.

The board approved sewage and water adjustments of $1,105.18 for the company.

Also approved were a one-month adjustment for Don Spencer, who lives in the west 400 block of Walnut Street, and two-month adjustment for Douglas Platt, who lives in the west 100 block of Lafayette Street.

In other business, the board:

•Approved a repayment agreement for former Portland Police Department officer Joshua Zimmerman. Officers agree to repay the cost of attending Indiana Law Enforcement Academy if they leave the department within three years of their hiring. Zimmerman will pay $250 a month towards his prorated balance of $7,977.07. He resigned in September. He is facing battery and strangulation charges in Jay Superior Court.

•Tabled opening gas and oil bids for The City of Portland. Bids for 2019 were due Wednesday but the board extended the deadline because the Post Office was closed that day.

•Decided to re-open bidding for the city’s old fire truck, which was replaced by a new truck recently. The deadline was Nov. 30 and so far there have been no formal bids, but clerk-treasurer Lori Ferguson said at least one municipality expressed interest.
