Bricker thanked for his kindness

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

I had noticed my son, Onan, lost a nut on his k-walker, so off to the hardware store we went.

We walk into True Value I go to the nut and bolt section. Well, I don’t know if it’s standard or metric let alone the size.

Onan and I walk up front to the desk and I stated, “I need help. Not sure who can help us.”

A gentleman by the name of David said, “Sure I would be more than happy to help you ma’am.”

So, I’m thinking, good deal, this is awesome.

Well, I explained Onan lost the nut to his wheel bolt at the bottom. I’m new with the equipment and needed a lock nut but, again, I know nothing on the size, metric or standard, so on and so forth.

He said, “OK, I will be right back. I’m going to grab a couple and we can get it taken care of, feel free to just stay up here.”

Just a few seconds go by and he’s back. He has a crescent wrench and three lock nuts. Luckily, he got the exact size. He realized the bolt started turning while trying to tighten the lock nut.

Again, kind as can be, he said, “I’ll be right back.”

He comes back with a socket set and he got the nut on. He then makes sure the inner bolt doesn’t hit Onan’s wheel and has him test it out. Onan goes around the shelf, comes back and it’s perfect.

David made sure it was in good working order before we left. I then thank him for not only finding the right lock nut, but for taking time to put it on without me asking.

I asked him how much the lock nut cost. He said, “You know, I’m not even worried about it.”

I then ask, “Are you sure?”

He said, “Yes, I’m positive. He’s all good to go now.”

I then tell Onan, “Hey, your walker is fixed bubby. He fixed it for you.”

Onan’s face lit up brighter than any light I’ve ever seen when he looked down and saw it was fixed. With a huge smile, Onan thanked David. I turned to shake his hand and he had the world’s biggest smile on his face knowing he made a special-needs child so happy.

The moral of the story, through all the negative things going on in the world and people taking even the smallest things for granted, it takes one small thing to make some people happy. All it took was a lock nut for my son’s walker.

The kind, caring, compassionate, courteous service we got tonight was enough to make me cry, knowing there are still great people in the world. David obviously is there for his community’s people and cares.

I hope this makes it’s way David to see I am spreading the word on how generous he is and that he has my future business. This man helped when he didn’t  have to, but this also shows he has a spot in his heart for his community.

David Bricker, you, sir, are a blessing to Portland, Indiana. Thank you for all you do.

Thank you,

Abrill and Onan Ellis
