Capsule Reports
Two injured
Two people were injured in a vehicle collision Saturday afternoon.
Brittani M. Miller, 24, was driving her 2006 Ford Fusion east on Como Road approaching its intersection with Indiana 67. According to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report, Miller failed to stop at the stop sign and entered the intersection, striking the side of the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Claudia Elena was driving. Elena, 47, Portland, was driving south on Indiana 67. The collision caused the Cruze to go off the road.
Anna Perez, 22, Portland, was a passenger in the Cruze. She sustained incapacitating injuries to her arm and was transported to IU Health Jay for treatment. Elena sustained a cut to her face and was treated at the scene.
The Cruze is registered to Daniela Nieto, Portland.
Miller was cited for failing to yield at the intersection.
Damage in the 4:40 p.m. collision is estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.
Deer struck
There were two vehicle accidents involving deer Sunday.
At 12:29 a.m., Keith N. Rinker, 17, Portland, was driving east on county road 50 South near its intersection with county road 400 West when a deer ran out into the road. Rinker struck it with the 2011 Ford Fiesta he was driving, causing an estimated $1,000 to $2,500 in damage.
The Ford is registered to Beth and Neil Rinker, Portland.
Jason M. Ballard, 31, Ridgeville, was driving west on county road 800 South near its intersection with U.S. 27 when a deer ran in front of the 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer he was driving. He was unable to avoid hitting it.
The Trailblazer is registered to Jamie C. Ballard, Ridgeville.
Damage in the 7:44 p.m. collision is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Failure to yield
An Indianapolis man drove off the road early Saturday morning after failing to stop at a T-intersection.
Julian A. Lytle, 21, was driving his 2008 Ford F150 west on Indiana 26 approaching its T-intersection with Indiana 1. He failed to stop at the intersection and continued driving west, entering the ditch and striking two road signs before coming to rest in a field.
Damage in the 12:05 a.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Failure to yield
A Union City teen and a Huntington woman were involved in a vehicle collision Friday afternoon.
Madalyn L. Garringer, 17, Union City, was driving east on county road 200 South approaching its intersection with U.S. 27. According to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report, Garringer failed to yield at the intersection and struck the side of Cheryl R. Canvin’s car. Canvin, 50, Huntington, was driving her 2008 Ford Escape south on U.S. 27.
Garringer was driving a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am, registered to Marc L. Garringer, Union City.
Damage in the 3:30 p.m. collision is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
OWI
A Wabash woman was arrested for drunk driving after crashing her car early Sunday morning.
Kayla L. Warner, 19, 1200 Hazel St., was driving her 2010 Ford Fusion east on Indiana 67 near its intersection with State Line Road. She told Jay County Sheriff’s Office her tire malfunctioned, causing her to drive off the road into a ditch.
Warner was arrested on the preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor.
She was booked at 4:27 a.m. into Jay County Jail and is being held on a $1,000 bond.
Damage in the 2:29 a.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Vehicles collide
Two vehicles collided Saturday night as both drivers attempted to pass the same car.
Donald E. Heare, 55, Portland, was driving east on Indiana 67 near its intersection with county road 700 South. Haley M. Livingston, 19, Celina, Ohio, was driving in front of Heare, and another car was traveling in front of her. As Heare attempted to pass both vehicles, Livingston merged to pass the car in front of her, causing her 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix to collide with Heare’s 2016 Dodge Charger.
Damage in the 10:13 p.m. collision is estimated to be less than $1,000.
Theft
A Portland woman was arrested Saturday for allegedly stealing from Walmart.
Maria Garringer, 48, 678 Katelynn Drive, was preliminarily charged with theft: receiving stolen property, a Class A misdemeanor. According to a Portland Police Department report, Garringer allegedly attempted to steal $64 worth of toys from the store at 950 W. Votaw St., Portland.
She was booked at 6:40 p.m. into Jay County Jail and was later released on a $1,000 bond.
Moped stolen
A Portland man reported his moped stolen Sunday.
Dennis E. Roush, who lives in the 100 block of Moody Avenue, told Portland Police Department his 2014 TaoTao moped had been taken from his residence. He last saw it Saturday night and discovered it was missing around 1 p.m. Sunday. The blue and white moped is valued at $450.
Wallet missing
A Portland woman reported her wallet stolen Sunday.
Melissa Caldwell told Portland Police Department she was working at Walmart’s pharmacy at 950 W. Votaw St., Portland, on Saturday. She had her wallet with her, but noticed it was missing when she left work. She reported it stolen Sunday. The wallet contained $500 in cash and her identification cards.
