The Bearcats backed off defensively in the early going and the Patriots jumped out on top.

Once the pressure increased, the Patriots weren’t able to handle it.

Muncie Central’s press defensively forced the Jay County High School boys basketball team into a panic as it turned the ball over on eight straight possessions in the first half on Saturday. The Bearcats subsequently went on a 14-0 run in that span and never looked back in beating the Patriots, 65-53.

“I was disappointed in some of our guards and some of our people that wouldn’t help bring the ball up,” said JCHS coach Chris Krieg, whose team dips to 7-3 on the year. “In the second quarter when I had to sub in, I’m disappointed in our players because no one wanted the basketball.”

At one point, Jay County led Muncie Central (3-6) 11-4 before MCHS coach Chandler Thompson called a time out with 4:14 to play in the opening period. That’s when the Bearcats increased their defensive pressure and started creating havoc for the Patriots.

A Xavier Ninde basket put Jay County out front 13-11, and after a Bearcat miss the pressure started to get to Jay County. It threw the ball away on its next possession then got called for an offensive foul. It had two more turnovers in the quarter as Muncie Central built a 15-13 lead after one period of play.

Things continued to get worse for the Patriots. KJ Jackson picked a Patriot player from behind for a steal that led to a free throw at the other end. On the next possession Jay County gave up the ball and Victor Young dunked for two of his team-high 14 points for the Bearcats, who at that point led 18-13. Damarius Pegues added a fast-break bucket before Young hit the first of first of his pair of 3-pointers in the period to put Muncie Central on top, 23-13.

“We lost some mental toughness,” Krieg said. “They’re more athletic than us, I understand that. We have to play smarter.”

Late in the second quarter, baskets by Wyatt Geesaman and Landon Grimes, both on assists from Ryan Schlechty, got the Patriots within seven.

They didn’t get as close again as Young drained a triple from the left wing and after yet another Patriot turnover a Dylan Stafford 3-pointer put the margin back at double digits.

Against the faster and more agile Bearcats, the Patriots had to decide what to focus on — either defend the paint and leave open the perimeter or guard outside shots and be vulnerable inside. Krieg chose the former since Muncie Central was shooting just 26 percent from distance.

Behind Young’s 4-for-4 effort and Stafford going making three of four attempts from beyond the arc, the Bearcats were 10-of-24 (42 percent) against the Patriots.

“They have not shot threes that well all year long,” Krieg said. “We had to give up the threes if we’re giving up something because they are explosive getting to the basket and they’ll out-jump us.

“We had to give up something.”

Jay County’s Michael Schlechty was perfect on the night, going 7-of-7 from the field and making both of his free throws to lead all players with 17 points. He had nine of the Patriots’ first 11 points.

“I know early he did well,” Krieg said. “We just didn’t get it to him enough.”

Junior varsity

Jayden Long’s 3-pointer with five seconds remaining lifted Muncie Central to a 40-37 victory in double over time.

Jay County (8-2) trailed after each of the first three quarters before holding the Bearcats to just two points in the final period to force overtime with the score tied at 32 apiece. One extra stanza wasn’t enough to decide a winner as both teams managed only two points in the first overtime period.

Quinn Faulkner scored 12 points to lead Jay County in the loss, and Gavin Lambert chipped in 10 points. Brinnin Wasson and Ethan Dirksen tallied five points each.

Long’s 13 points were a game high.

Freshman

A strong third quarter gave Jay County a 35-31 win.

The Patriots (4-3) trailed by one at the end of the first quarter and went into intermission behind 18-16. A 13-5 margin in the third period put the home team out front by six and they were able to hang on to go back above .500.

Adam Muhlenkamp scored 13 points for Jay County, which got 11 from Crosby Heniser and three each from Darius Esparza and Camdin Harrison. Trenton Alexander and Gavin Myers tallied tow points each.
