Louis Schoenlein

Louis A. Schoenlein, age 94, former Portland resident passed away Sunday at his daughter's residence in Liberty, Indiana.

He was born in St. Peter, Ohio, on Sept. 28, 1923, the son of Peter and Veronica (Braun) Schoenlein. He was married April 29, 1947, to Mary J. Mestemaker and she passed away Nov. 24, 2013.

He was owner of Quality Cleaners and had been a custodian at East Jay Junior High School. He served on Jay School Board for eight years and was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Surviving are three sons, Rick Schoenlein (wife: Debbie) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Tony Schoenlein (wife: Brenda) of Indianapolis and Jim Schoenlein (wife: Debbie) of Dayton, Ohio; three daughters, Becky Matchett (husband: Rick) of Portland, Letha Harding (husband: Ken) of Madison and Yvonne Wells-Scheib (husband: Carl) of Liberty; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 1  p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Fr. Robert Moran presiding. Burial will follow in Green Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Baird-Freeman Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Masses for the Schoenlein/Mestemaker Families.
