The Cadets snuffed out much of what the Patriots wanted to do offensively.

They just couldn’t handle the defensive pressure.

Jay County High School’s girls basketball team came up with big steals late in the game and kept Concordia to just two points in the fourth quarter Tuesday in a 32-27 victory over the Class 3A No. 3 Cadets.

“Jay County played a lot harder than we did, that’s the bottom line,” said Concordia coach Dave Miller, whose team was held to a season-low point total and 21 points below its per-game average. “They out-worked us. That’s it. They outplayed us. They got all the loose balls. They took balls out of our hands.”

Then Miller said it again.

“They outplayed us.”

Jay County coach Kirk Comer commended the effort put forth by his team in the final eight minutes.

“It was a possession game and every possession mattered,” said Comer, whose team moves to 9-6 and has won each of its last four games. “Down the stretch we were fortunate enough to make the plays, hit some free throws (and) got some stops.”

Hannah Phillips scored on a fast break to tie the score at 27 with 5:30 to play, and the Cadets (11-5) committed the first of three consecutive turnovers.

After the third giveaway, Gwen Omstead made two free throws to put her team out front 29-27 with less than three minutes to play.

Concordia missed twice on the ensuing possession and Omstead was again sent to the line but missed the first of a one-and-one opportunity. At the other end of the court, though, Briana Muhlenkamp came up with the first of her two fourth-quarter steals.

“I thought Briana had a really good game,” Comer said. Muhlenkamp missed all three shots she attempted and her only free-throw attempt, but had a game-high four assists to go with her five rebounds.

“She didn’t score a lot,” Comer added. “She had several steals, big steals. Guarded (Carissa) Garcia a lot of the game.

“We made the plays when we had to make the plays. She’s a senior. You expect her to do that. She wasn’t going to lose.”

Garcia, Concordia’s leading scorer, entered having averaged 20.9 points per game. She had 11 points at half Tuesday, but just five in the final 16 minutes.

“We felt if we could contain her we could win,” Comer said. “We talked about it at halftime, we wanted other girls to beat us. If we were going to lose we wanted other girls to beat us.”

Nothing came easy for the standout Cadet junior, who was 6-of-15 from the field including 2-of-5 from long range.

“I thought the girls did a really nice job of helping out on Garcia, especially there in the last couple minutes when we needed big stops,” Comer said.

Concordia shot 1-for-12 in the fourth quarter. Chastity Craig’s field goal 1:08 into the period accounted for the only points for the Cadets, and it gave them a 27-23 lead.

“We couldn’t finish anything either tonight,” Miller said.

Phillips made two free throws with 1:27 left to push the JCHS lead to 31-27, and Hanna Ault split a pair of free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the win.

Ault had a team-best eight rebounds to go with her seven points, which tied Kendra Muhlenkamp for second on the squad. Caldwell led the Patriots with 10 points as she and Ault both made a pair of 3-pointers. Muhlenkamp was second on the team with six boards in helping Jay County to a 31-24 advantage on the glass, including 11 offensive rebounds.

“They wanted it more and they deserved to win,” Miller said.

Jay County was kept off the scoreboard in the opening quarter and couldn’t recover in a 36-21 loss to Concordia.

The Cadets grabbed a 5-0 advantage after the first period before pushing the advantage to 14-8 at halftime. Both teams scored eight points in the third quarter as Concordia held on to its six-point lead heading into the fourth as it pulled away in the final period.

Pacie Denney had a pair of second-half 3-pointers in leading Jay County with six points. Aubrie Schwieterman, Mikele Suman, Kendal Garringer, Kensey Litton and Macey Weitzel all had three points.
