For the first 150 yards Thursday night, another loss for the Patriot boys looked imminent.

After all, they were 1-7 entering the first home meet of the new year.

But then Garrett Campbell dived into the pool, surpassed Celina’s Holden Cubberly and gave the Patriots a victory in the 200-yard medley relay.

It was a sign of a winning night in their home pool.

The Jay County High School boys swim team earned two of the top three spots in the 10 contested swimming events and the JCHS girls swept the first three places in a trio of races Thursday as both Patriot teams defeated the visiting Celina Bulldogs.

“When you start off a meet the way we did — girls medley relay (winning by more than three seconds) and then with a come-from-behind win in the boys medley relay — there is nothing that sets the tone better,” said JCHS coach Matt Slavik, whose squads host the Jay County Invitational on tonight and Saturday. “Our boys needed that. They needed some excitement.”

The Jay County boys picked up a commanding 192-66 win to move to 2-7 on the season, and the Patriot girls were first in all but one event in a 176-118 victory as they have now won 10 consecutive dual meets.

“It was a good night,” Slavik added.

After the butterfly leg of the medley relay, Celina led Jay County by 93 hundredths of a second. As Tayler Smeltzer touched the wall, Campbell dived off the block to take on the challenge of putting his relay, and squad, out front. He finished with a split of 23.78 seconds — Cubberly had a time of 30.53 seconds — giving the Patriot relay not just an event win, but a commanding one. Jay County’s time of 1 minute, 55.16 seconds, was five seconds faster than Celina.

“Garrett is a come-from-behind guy,” Slavik said. Campbell was also first in the 200 individual medley (2:25.18) and 500 freestyle (6:10.95), and helped the 200 freestyle relay team — joining him were Chase McFarland, Skyler Myers and Smeltzer — win in 1:42.45.

“His best time has always been when he’s 5 or more yards behind,” Slavik added. “He makes a close race of it and tonight he succeeded.”

Alex LeMaster and McFarland were also in on the medley relay, and they each won an individual race too. LeMaster swam to a time of 1:15.73 in the 100 breaststroke, and McFarland won the 100 freestyle in 56.78 seconds. Myers had a victory in the 50 freestyle in 24.46 seconds.

“The boys just needed this mentally,” Slavik said. “It’s great to see them put another W on the board and have fun doing what they’re doing.”

Jay County’s girls had another dominating performance with the Bulldogs as its latest casualty. The Patriots placed first in every swimming event, including the top three spots in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Eliza Bader had the first of her two wins in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.17 seconds, ahead of both Erica Hathaway and Jenna Dunfee.

In the 100 freestyle, junior Vivienne Kunkler won in 59.42 seconds, with Elizabeth McDowell and Lilly Clemmons second and third respectively. Bader also led the charge in the 100 backstroke in 1:06.30, with Rieley Brewster second and Dunfee third.

“It was fun to watch the girls swim tonight,” Slavik said. “It always is. I am blessed to have a group of kids that works as hard as they do and has as much fun as they do.”

Kunkler was also first in the 100 breaststroke for her second individual win on the evening. Alex Bader got victories victories in the 200 IM (2:15.05) and 100 butterfly (1:00.09) as the Patirots had three double winners. McDowell (200 freestyle – 2:13.92) and Hathaway (500 freestyle – 5:55.86) were also first in their respective races.

McDowell, Hathaway and the Baders combined to win the 200 medley relay in 1:56.91. Ashlyn Dow, Alex Bader, Kunkler and Hathaway won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.81, and Eliza Bader, McDowell, Dow and Kunkler teamed to finish first in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:03.68.

There was no boys 400 freestyle relay.

“Both the girls and boys need this (win),” Slavik said.
