A pair of area Republican candidates got some competition Friday.

Jenae (Horn) Blasdel became the third candidate to file to run for the District 33 seat being vacated by Greg Beumer in the Indiana Statehouse, and Chad Aker turned in paperwork to challenge incumbent Jay County Commissioner Barry Hudson.

Friday also saw the first candidate file to run for Richland Township Trustee.

Blasdel, chairman of the Jay County Republican Party, will be making her first run for elected office as she takes on John “J.D.” Prescott for the Republican nomination for the District 33 seat that represents all of Jay and Randolph counties and part of Delaware County. A 2005 Jay County High School graduate, she went on to get a degree in agricultural economics from Purdue University, was the campaign manager for Beumer in 2014 and has served multiple internships in the Statehouse.

Prescott is a Winchester Community High School graduate and rural Union City farmer who will also be making his first run for office. He filed his candidacy Tuesday.

Shon Byrum, who is Mayor of Winchester, is the lone Democrat to file thus far in District 33.

Beumer, who was first appointed to the seat in 2013 and has since won two terms in office, announced in November that he would not run for re-election.

Aker, a 1990 Jay County High School graduate, will be making his first run for office as he seeks to unseat Hudson for commissioner of the middle district. He is a firefighter for the City of Portland and has previously served as fire chief.

Hudson became a commissioner in May when a Republican caucus selected him to fill out the term vacated by Doug Inman.

Aker’s second cousin, Brian, finished as the runner-up among six candidates in the caucus voting.

Also adding his name to the list of candidates Friday was Democrat David L. Champ, who filed to run for Richland Township Trustee.

In addition to the races for the District 33 state representative and county commissioner positions, there will also be contested elections in Jay County for the Republican nominations for sheriff (incumbent Dwane Ford against former sheriff Ray Newton), the county council third district seat (incumbent Faron Parr against Caleb Lutes) and assessor (Robin Alberson against Cherrie Geesaman).

The deadline to file is noon Feb. 9.
