The Patriots finally had some time to prepare for an opponent.

They pride themselves on preparation.

Through the first eight minutes, the Starfires weren’t able to crack the armor.

And in the second quarter, Jordan Stultz found his groove.

The Jay County High School boys basketball team forced 10 turnovers in the first quarter and Stultz came off the bench for a career night Friday in a 52-32 victory over the South Adams Starfires.

“It gets us back into our routine,” JCHS coach Chris Krieg said of having all week to prepare for the Starfires. “We know exactly how this week is going to play out for us and that is what we had to do.

“When these kids have a week to prepare for a team we are pretty good.”

South Adams coach Trent Lehman, whose team dips to 4-8 (1-2 Allen County Athletic Conference) was disappointed with his team’s play in the opening period.

“Twenty-five turnovers for the game and 10 in the first quarter,” he said. “A ton of them were just catch and passes. I don’t know how to help that.”

Only four of those turnovers, however, led to points at the other end of the floor.

Ryan Schlechty assisted on a Holton Hill basket for the first points of the game nearly 90 seconds in. Two minutes later, Cole Stigleman scored on a fast break, and a minute after that Wyatt Geesaman split a pair of free throws to make it 7-3.

The Starfires gave the ball away on their ensuing possession, and Geesaman converted a Stigleman assist for a 9-3 advantage.

“I felt like our defense took them out of a lot of things,” Krieg said. “We are really good defensively when we’re on — active hands, feet always moving. That caused them a lot of problems tonight.”

Jay County (8-6, 2-0 ACAC) led 13-5 after the first quarter, but just before halftime is when Stultz made the most of his increased role.

Michael Schlechty was out with an illness, so Stultz was given more of an opportunity as a guard. The 5-foot, 9-inch senior scored eight points in the period, including a pair of 3-pointers, and had a basket at the buzzer to end the first half.

His first basket was a 3-pointer from the left wing on a Hill pass to make it 27-11 with less than three minutes to play. Two possessions later, Stigleman found him at the right wing for another triple.

Stultz took three more shots from long range but they all missed. Nearing the end of the quarter, he had a shot from near the baseline plunk off the side of the backboard, but the rebound fell to him and he banked a shot off the glass at the buzzer.

“We know Jordan can shoot the basketball,” Krieg said.

Stultz added a pair of free throws in the third quarter to finish with a career-high 10 points, one fewer than his season total.

“Tonight I thought they had some players step up and hit some shots, some kids that hadn’t scored much for them,” Lehman said.

Max Moser, a senior, had a season-high 11 points as he started in place of Schlechty. He was 4-of-7 from the field, including a 3-pointer, with his only misses from behind the arc.

“Max has been inconsistent at times but I felt (he and Stultz) stepped up and did an excellent job,” Krieg said.

Jay County, which has won four of its last five games, scored 21 points in the second quarter as it went into the locker room leading 34-13. The Patriots later doubled-up the Starfires as they had a 52-26 advantage late in the third quarter before emptying the bench.

Stigleman had a team-high 13 points to give the Patriots three players in double figures.

Kody Fike was one of the few bright spots for the Starfires. He posted game highs in both points (15) — a dozen of those came in the second half — and rebounds (10). David Muselman was second on the team with eight points.

Jay County kept South Adams off the scoreboard for more than eight minutes in the second half in a 43-26 victory.

The Patriots (8-3) rallied from a 9-6 deficit after one period of play to lead 19-18 at half. Jay County outscored South Adams 11-5 in the third quarter before pulling away in the fourth by limiting the Starfires to just three points.

Gabe Link and Gabe Faulkner led Jay County with 14 and 12 points respectively. Gavin Randall was third on the team with eight points.

Drew Stutzman had 10 points to lead the Starfires, who also got nine points from Spencer Fear and five from Nick Miller.
