WOODBURN — A year after sweeping the conference titles, the Patriots weren’t able to repeat the feat.

The Jay County High School wrestling team had three individual champions as it finished second in the Allen County Athletic Conference individual tournament Saturday at Woodlan.

Adams Central claimed the team title with 246 points. Jay County totaled 233.5 for second place, and Southern Wells was third with 183.5 points.

South Adams, which had two individual titles, scored 154.5 for fourth.

Gaven Hare and Mason Winner of Jay County repeated as conference champions. Hare won the 285-pound weight class to become the program’s first three-time ACAC champion. Winner received a bye to the semifinal and recorded two pins in matches that took a combined 3 minutes, 47 seconds. George Lykins was the 195-pound champ.

Wyatt Miller and Michael Rupp of South Adams both won consecutive ACAC championships. Miller was crowned at 106 pounds, and Rupp had the top spot at 113 pounds.



Gymnasts second

KOKOMO — Jay County’s gymnastics team was second Saturday at the Northwestern Invitational.

The host Tigers were first with a team score of 101.1, and Jay County totaled 98 for the second consecutive meet. Noblesville totaled 97.825 for third out of nine teams.

Kenzie Ring, a freshman, had the best individual place for the Patriots as she was third on uneven bars with her score of 8.525. She was also fifth on floor exercise (8.4), while adding 8.375 on vault and 7.875 on balance beam for an all-around total of 33.175, which was fifth.

Karlie Bullard placed fourth on floor with 8.525. She earned 8.275 on beam, 8.3 on vault and 8.225 on bars. Her all-around total of 33.425 was fourth.

Rachel Louck’s 8.175 on floor was sixth.



SA dominates

BERNE — The South Adams girls basketball team dominated the Woodlan Warriors on Saturday in a 51-22 victory.

South Adams (13-8, 5-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) was out front 14-6 after the first quarter and went into the break with a 25-11 advantage. A 16-4 advantage in the third period but the Stars out front 41-15 with eight minutes to play.

Sydney Pierce led the Starfires with 16 points, including going 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. Lexi Dellinger was second with 15 points, and Madi Wurster was third with nine points.

The South Adams junior varsity lost to the Warriors, 35-23. Lydia Loshe and Kelsa Ortiz both had six points, and Taylor Augsburger totaled five points.



Chowning third

INDIANAPOLIS — Lita Chowning placed third Friday in the Indiana High School Girls Wrestling State Finals at Lawrence North High School.

Chowning, a Jay County freshman, bounced back from a semifinal loss to finish third at 98 pounds.

After losing to eventual state champion Destiny Garris of Evansville Central by pin in the semifinal she rebounded to pin Haley Hoover of Tippecanoe Valley in 4 minutes, 2 seconds. In the third-place match, she pinned Cassie Lear of Lafayette Jefferson in 43 seconds.

Chowning joins Kendal Huey and Jade Zorn as IHSGW state placers for the Patriots. In 2017, Huey (106 pounds) was third and Zorn (113) was fourth.



Hill fourth

INDIANAPOLIS — Halle Hill tied for fourth on the balance beam Sunday in the Circle of the Stars gymnastics meet at Indiana Convention Center.

Hill, a sophomore at Jay County High School, totaled 8.55 points to finish fourth. She was also fifth on floor exercise (8.925) sixth on vault (8.8). She did not compete on uneven bars and her all-around total of 26.275 was seventh.

Courtney Miles, a JCHS senior, scored 8.725 on floor for fifth, was sixth on vault (8.8) and eighth on bars (7.225). She skipped beam to place ninth with a 24.75 on all-around.



Squads compete

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Two JC Xtreme cheer squads competed Sunday in the Cheer Max Pop Tabs for Charity at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

The Junior Level 2 squad, made up of 20 girls ages 7 to 14 years old, was second out of five.

The Mini Level 1 team, which had nine girls between 5 and 7 years old, were third out of seven squads.

Both teams will be traveling to Kissimmee, Florida, in April after earning paid bids from a previous competition.
