RICHMOND — The Patriots had a lead in the first quarter and fell behind in the second.
A fourth-quarter rally capped the regular season on a positive note.
Jay County High School’s girls basketball team scored 21 points in the fourth quarter Tuesday in a 50-42 win over in the regular-season finale against the Richmond Red Devils.
The Patriots, who have won three straight, open sectional play at 6 p.m. Tuesday against the Burris Owls at Blackford with a 15-8 record.
Jay County was out front 10-7 on Tuesday heading into the second quarter but trailed 19-14 at half. The Red Devils (11-11) took a 34-29 advantage after three quarters before the Patriots mounted the comeback in the final period.
Shelby Caldwell had a team-high 19 points for the Patriots, who also got 13 points from Hannah Phillips and 10 from Hanna Ault.
Kendra Muhlenkamp led the squad with a career-high 11 rebounds.
The Patriot junior varsity team ended its season 16-4 with a 28-27 victory. Kendal Garringer and Pacie Denney led JCHS with seven and six points respectively. Aubrie Schwieterman and Grace Saxman both chipped in four points.
SA swimmers fall
MUNCIE — The South Adams swim teams both came up short against the host Delta Eagles on Tuesday.
The SAHS girls lost 105-80 while the boys fell 111-72.
Ashley LeFever was the lone double winner for the Starfire girls, as she was first in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races. Olivia Von Gunten took first place in the 100 butterfly and Bella Bailey was victorious in the 100 breaststroke.
Isabella Von Gunten, Olivia Von Gunten, LeFever and Bailey combined to win both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay.
In the boys competition, Zach Colpaert placed first in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, and Kam Yoder finished first in the 200 individual medley.
Trey Lehman, Curtis Sprunger, Yoder and Colpaert teamed to win the 200 medley relay.
Nichols leads in loss
DUNKIRK — Parker Nichols nearly reached 30 points, but it wasn’t enough as the West Jay Middle School sixth grade A team lost to Monroe Central, 40-37.
The WJMS B team fell 16-8.
Nichols exploded for 27 points, and Liam Garringer was second with five points. Jackson Edwards and Ryan Cross contributed three and two points, respectively.
In the B team’s game, Jason Ayala led the Eagles with five points, and Peyton Lykins added five points.
