BUTLER — The Starfires rallied in the fourth to force overtime.
Then the Blazers nabbed a lead and never gave it up.
The host Eastside Blazers scored the first four points of overtime Tuesday and the defending sectional champion South Adams High School girls basketball team wasn’t able to rally again in a 46-41 loss in the opening round of the Class 2A Sectional 36 tournament.
South Adams (15-9) trailed after each of the first three quarters but held a 6-4 edge in the fourth to force overtime against the Blazers (15-8), who advance to the sectional semifinal Friday against the Canterbury Cavaliers.
Eastside led by as many as seven, 45-38, with 17.8 seconds left in overtime.
Lydia Loshe was the leading scorer for the Starfires with 12 points. Madi Wurster and Sydney Pierce contributed 11 points each, while the school’s all-time leading scorer Lexi Dellinger was limited to just two points.
Seniors Calyssa Lehman, Pierce, Wurster and Dellinger leave the program with a 64-35 record, the most wins of any class in program history.
Divers carry boys
MONROE — The Patriots’ three divers were uncontested Tuesday and it carried the Jay County boys swim team to a 93-90 win over the host Adams Central Flying Jets.
JCHS won three of its final four meets to finish at 5-8.
Orlando Castro totaled 164.65 points, finishing ahead of teammate Gabe Blankenship and Giovanni Period.
Garrett Campbell paved the way with a pair of victories. He was first in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.24 seconds, and won the 100 backstroke in 1 minute, 5.22 seconds.
Chase McFarland was first place in the 500 freestyle in 5:46.05, and Alex LeMaster had a time of 1:16.98 to win the 100 breaststroke.
Tayler Smeltzer, Skyler Myers, Campbell and McFarland teamed to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:42.49.
Chiefs split
East Jay Middle School’s sixth grade girls basketball teams split games Tuesday with the Yorktown Tigers.
The A team earned a 28-17 win, while the B squad fell 20-7.
Sophie Saxman and Bralee VanSkyock had 12 and 10 points respectively for the A squad. Breanna Dirksen contributed four points, and Molly Muhlenkamp had two points.
Brenna Hanes scored three points for the B team. Joske Herndon and Allison Hawbaker both had two points.
