Animal collision
A Portland woman struck an animal with her car Saturday night near Dunkirk.
Amanda M. James, 34, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was traveling east on county road 400 South near its intersection with Indiana 1 when an animal came onto the roadway. She said she was unable to avoid hitting the animal with her 2014 Ford Edge.
Damage in the 10:45 p.m. collision is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Theft
A Dunkirk woman was arrested Sunday after allegedly attempting to shoplift from Dollar General.
Portland Police Department was called to the store at 220 W. Lincoln Ave., Portland, for a report of a woman attempting to shoplift items totaling $45.
Officers arrested Angela L. Fields, 45, 305 E. Ohio St., on the preliminary charges of theft and possession of a controlled substance, both Class A misdemeanors.
She was booked at 4:56 p.m. into Jay County Jail and is being held there on a $1,500 bond.
Bike theft
A Portland woman reported her daughter’s bike stolen Friday.
Heather D. Jones told Portland Police Department her daughter’s bike was taken from the front of 104 S. Harrison St., Portland. The bike is a 20-inch purple Huffy.
Fire calls
Salamonia Fire Department responded to a call of a fire Friday afternoon.
At 2:48 p.m., a caller reported a wheat field was on fire at county roads 550 East and 400 South. The fire was put out by 3:03 p.m.
On Saturday, Pennville Fire Department responded to a report of a grass fire.
The department was called at 1:32 p.m. to Indiana 18 and county road 1150 West. Montpelier Fire Department also responded to the call, and the fire was put out by 1:50 p.m.
