Funds available
United Way of Jay County has been awarded more than $4,000 in federal funds to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in Jay County. Public or nonprofit agencies interested in applying for these funds should contact Jane Ann Runyon by calling (260) 726-7010.
Applications must be made by June 15. Awards will be made June 19.
Roll-over
A commercial vehicle rolled Thursday night when its driver veered off the road to avoid a car.
Dale T. Durham, 55, Winchester, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was driving south on Indiana 1 near its intersection with county road 350 North. As his 1992 Peterbilt 379 crested a hill, a silver sedan driving north was in his line traveling towards the truck. Durham said he had to veer off the west side of the road to avoid hitting the car, which caused the semi to roll onto its side into a field.
Estimated damage in the 7:52 p.m. accident is estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.
Drove off road
A Portland woman’s car was damaged Thursday when she drove off the road and struck a parked vehicle.
Bonnie E. Carder, 41, was driving south on Wayne Street. She told Portland Police Department she overcorrected as she entered Boundary Pike Drive, causing her 2010 Hyundai Elantra to drive into a yard and strike a parked 2010 Kia Motors Forte registered to Makayla N. Smith, Portland.
Carder complained of shoulder pain but refused medical treatment.
Damage in the 7:45 p.m. accident is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.
Theft
A Portland man reported that someone had broken into his garage and damaged his car.
Bob Brown, who lives in the 800 block of Main Street, told Portland Police Department Thursday that someone had broken into his garage overnight. His 1977 Chevrolet Corvette was damaged and a radio and two speakers were taken from the vehicle. Some bottles were also smashed.
Criminal mischief
A Portland man reported that someone had entered his garage.
Curt D. McLaughlin, who lives in the 1000 block of Arch Street, told Portland Police Department Wednesday that someone had entered his garage. Window screens were cut and things were moved, but nothing was taken.
Indiana State Police were called to investigate.
Grass fire
Bryant Fire Department responded to a report of a grass fire Thursday.
Someone driving by saw that the yard was on fire at 2769 E. Indiana 67, Bryant, and reported it at 2:22 p.m.
In area courts
Area residents were fined and sentenced recently in Celina (Ohio) Municipal Court.
Tiffany R. Turner, 29, Fort Recovery, pleaded no contest to theft. She was sentenced to serve 60 days in jail with 30 days suspended. She was also ordered to complete 30 hours of community service, to not visit any Dollar General and to pay $32.18 in restitution.
Andrew J. Gerstner, 22, Fort Recovery, pleaded no contest to operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He was fined $375, had his license suspended for one year, assessed court costs and ordered to attend three days of alcohol counseling.
Juanette M. Snyder, 34, Portland, pleaded no contest to no motorcycle endorsement and violation of marks, placards or stickers. She was fined $100 and assessed court costs.
Dustin Roser, 24, Portland, pleaded guilty to failure to obey traffic signs. He was fined $50 and assessed court costs.
Andrew J. Heitkamp, 18, Fort Recovery, was fined $25 for speeding.
