Disruption is fine, destruction isn't

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Jack Ronald’s editorial in the June 8 issue of The Commercial Review was a good rebuttal to the insanity coming out of Washington lately.

America should be afraid and the alarms should be ringing. Ian Bremmer, who writes for Time magazine, wrote an article in the May 14 issue that chronicled the rise of strong authoritarian leaders in the world. Vladimir Putin, Rodrigo Duterte, Viktor Orban and Recep Tayyip Ergodan and Donald J. Trump all have one thing in common: They attack or suppress a free press.

With regard to the first four men, they kill or jail journalists. They all maintain their position by instilling fear in the populace. Fear of the other. They all attack and/or discredit the institutions that would challenge their hold on power.

Ian Bremmer’s book — “Us vs Them: the Failure of Globalism” — paints a picture of how these men have rose to power by using fear to achieve their goals, the fear of the “other.”

Why have immigrants become such a hot button issue not only in the United States but in Europe as well?

Simple: they are the “other.”

There is an abundance of evidence that shows immigration actually helps a countries economy. But to the fear monger facts don’t matter, they would rather dwell in the darkness of ignorance than to step into the light of knowledge, and that is where they want us to dwell as well.

We are facing a pivotal change in the country and I will be long in my grave before it is fully realized, but change is coming none the less.

Until members of Congress, regardless of party, grow some stones and stand up for our Constitution and the institutions of the country, we tarry at our own peril. Like Jack said: “It’s about the rule of law.”

Patti Davis’s column, “President Regan would be appalled,” was a distinctive contrast to the almost daily socially defective swill that emanates from the White House.

People who support Trump like to say he is a disrupter. Fine, but what we don’t need and what he seems hell-bent on becoming is a destroyer.
