Redkey changes
Redkey Town Council held a special meeting Thursday and approved four change orders from the original contract for the wastewater treatment plant project. Fleis & Vandenbrink Engineering, Inc. are the engineers for the project and the contractor is Robert E. Crosby, Inc.
Removal and disposal of the inner ring sludge and debris will be done at a cost of $32,968.
Painting of the conduit in rooms H101 and H202 of the headworks building will be deleted, which will be a cost savings of $3,800. In room H201 of the headworks building, insulation of grating will be deleted for a savings of $4,200.
A submergence rated pressure transmitter will be purchased and an upgrade to the lab basement electrical/components will be done so the area is submersible at a cost of $13,103.
Backing accident
A Portland woman struck a parked car with the vehicle she was driving Thursday.
Amanda K. Hirschy, 29, was backing up a 2002 Ford cargo van at CrownPointe of Portland, 745 Patriot Drive, when she struck a parked 2002 Buick LeSabre registered to Georgeanna Aslinger, Portland. The van is registered to CrownPointe.
Damage in the 12:37 p.m. collision is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Criminal mischief
An Illinois woman reported that her Portland property was broken into sometime in the last month.
Carolyn D. McDonald, Shelbyville, Illinois, told Portland Police Department her vacant house in the 800 block of West Main Street was entered sometime in the last month. Someone spray painted graffiti throughout the interior.
Backing collision
A Bryant woman struck another vehicle with her truck while backing out of a parking space Wednesday at Koffee Kup Diner.
Linda L. Heitkamp, 48, was backing her 2011 GMC pickup truck out of a spot at the diner, 301 N. Meridian St., Portland, when she struck the car Andrew P. Woodman was driving. Woodman, 26, Dunkirk, was traveling west on High Street in a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier, registered to Cristie L. Woodman, Dunkirk.
Damage in the 1:11 p.m. collision is estimated to be less than $1,000.
Backing accident
A Portland man and an Albany woman were involved in a vehicle collision Wednesday afternoon.
Gerald E. Thomas Jr., 56, was driving west on county road 300 North and was stopped at its intersection with U.S. 27. He told Jay County Sheriff’s Office a semi begin to turn onto county road 300 North from U.S. 27, so he backed the 2015 Ford F350 he was driving up to avoid it. Miranda L. Chrisman, 39, Albany, was stopped behind Thomas, who struck the 2013 Oldsmobile Intrigue she was driving, registered to Shawn M. Shawver, Albany. The Ford F350 is registered to Jay County Commissioners, Portland.
Damage in the 1:01 p.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Turning collision
Two Portland women were involved in a vehicle collision Thursday afternoon.
Cera Batt, 18, was driving a 2004 Ford Taurus south on Wayne Street and began to turn left onto High Street. She turned in front of Heather D. Weaver, 45, who was driving north on Wayne Street. Weaver, who was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer registered to Tom D. Weaver, Portland, told Portland Police Department she could not avoid a collision with the Batt car. The Taurus is registered to Stephanie Castillo, Portland.
Damage in the 4:33 p.m. accident is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.
Buggy and car collision
Several people were injured in a car and buggy collision Saturday in Adams County.
Debra Williams, 60, Geneva, was driving east on Adams County road 1100 South and approached its intersection with Adams County road 150 East.
As she passed through the intersection, a horse-drawn buggy driven by Jacob D. Graber, 41, Geneva, that was traveling north on 150 East did not stop at a stop sign. Williams was unable to avoid hitting the horse, which died from its injuries.
Four passengers in the buggy were injured in the accident. Sarah J.M. Graber, 49, sustained injuries to her back; Sarah J.S. Graber, 11, had injuries to her lower arm; Katie J.S. Graber, 9, had lower arm injuries; and Amos J.S. Graber, 7, had lower arm injuries.
Damage in the 2:57 pm. collision is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
In area courts
An area resident was fined and sentenced recently in Adams Superior Court.
Chad A. Billington, 43, Geneva, was found guilty of leaving the scene of an accident and false informing, both Class B misdemeanors. He was sentenced to 120 days in jail to be served consecutively to a previous case.
