Accepting applications
Portland Police Department is accepting applications for its Citizens Police Academy.
Classes, which are free, start run from 6:30 to 9 p.m. once a week beginning April 12. Applications are available at the police department, and the deadline is March 22.
Lost control
A Redkey man drove off the road Monday morning after losing control of the vehicle he was driving.
Austin J. Holliday, 26, was driving southwest on Indiana 67 just past its intersection with county road 700 South. He told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he thought he had slowed down enough as the car entered a curve in the road, but he lost control of the 2004 Chevy Malibu he was driving. The Malibu, registered to Emily M. Holliday, Redkey, struck a guardrail, spun and went partly off the road.
Damage in the 5:45 a.m. accident is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
Structure fire
A fire in Pennville was put out quickly Tuesday afternoon.
Pennville Fire Department and Jay Emergency Medical Service were called to the scene at 5856 W. 650 North at 3:47 p.m. Tuesday. While they were en route, the owners of the structure were able to put the fire out.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene at 4 p.m. and confirmed the fire was out at 4:01 p.m.
In area courts
A rural Geneva man was recently sentenced in Wells Superior Court.
Michael D. Bennett, 30, pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalency of 0.15 percent or greater, a Class A misdemeanor.
He was sentenced to a year in jail, with all but two days suspended, placed on probation for 363 days, ordered to complete a driver awareness course and to pay $825.50 in costs, fines and fees. His driver’s license was suspended for 30 days.
Area residents were recently fined in Celina (Ohio) Municipal Court.
Ryan J. Broering, 21, 890 Burkettsville-St. Henry Road, Fort Recovery, was fined $405 and costs and his license was suspended for one year for pleading non contest to OVI and failure to wear a seatbelt.
Debra M. Eglan, 39, Dunkirk, was fined $100 and costs after pleading no contest to no operator’s license.
Andrew C. Schwieterman, 23, 213 S. Wayne St., Fort Recovery, was fined $15 for speeding.
