Capsule Reports
Theft
A Portland woman reported her moped stolen Monday.
Courtney S. Nichols, 310 E. Main St., told Portland Police Department her moped was taken from her house sometime between 11 p.m. Sunday and 2 p.m. Monday. The moped is a 2002 purple Qingqi and its storage compartment door is missing.
Deer struck
A Bluffton man hit a deer with his car this morning.
Donald R. Karwoski, 57, was driving north on Indiana 1 near its intersection with county road 300 South when a deer ran out into the road. He told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was unable to avoid striking it with his 2015 Ford Edge.
Damage in the 7:10 a.m. collision is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
Gun theft
A Bryant man reported a shotgun missing from his home Monday.
Tyler Patterson, 7752 N. State Line Road, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he had gotten home around 7 p.m. Monday and noticed the front door was open. His wife Shelby checked the house’s windows and doors and discovered that a lock was removed from a door to the utility room. Patterson said a .410 break-action shotgun that the couple kept in a closet was missing.
Barn fire
A barn caught fire in Pennville on Monday afternoon.
Steven and Betty Drinkut, 7636 W. 550 North, were doing construction work around a barn on their property and had a fire going when the flames got out of control, lighting the barn on fire. Pennville Fire Department and Bryant Fire Department responded at 1:20 p.m. and were able to get the fire put out by about 3 p.m.
Jay County Sheriff’s Office and Jay Emergency Medical Service also responded to the call.
Forum is Thursday
There will be an Upper Salamonie River Watershed open forum from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Pennville Lions Club to discuss agricultural best management practices and cost-sharing funds available to farmers and landowners. Group to meet
Jay County Trailriders Association will hold its annual meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at Jay County Public Library. The meeting will include the election of officers.
Hosting clinic
Fort Recovery Police Department will host a free self defense class for seventh through 12 graders from 3:45 to 5:45 Thursday in the community room at Fort Recovery High School.
