Jackknifed
A semi jackknifed on Indiana 67 in Wabash Township about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, blocking the highway to traffic.
Ollie L. Wilkie Jr., 51, Jackson, Michigan, told the Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was eastbound and had slowed down due to snow on the roadway but lost control of the 2013 Freightliner he was driving.
His tractor ended up in a side ditch, with the trailer blocking the travel portion of the highway.
Damage was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
Rear-ended
Damage estimated between $5,000 and $10,000 was reported in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 27 at county road 400 North in Bearcreek Township about 4:10 p.m. Thursday.
Andrew Yoder, 49, Geneva, told the Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was northbound on U.S. 27 and had signaled to turn east on county road 400 North when his 2008 GMC pick-up was hit in the rear by a 2004 Pontiac Aztek driven by Anna M. Gaskill, 51, rural Portland. Gaskill told police she had not seen Yoder’s turn signal.
Backing up
Between $1,000 and $2,500 damage was reported in a backing accident in the north 800 block of Franklin Street in Portland about 4:15 p.m. Thursday.
Eric S. Weiland, 27, Portland, was backing a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer out of a parking space when it struck a southbound 2010 Ford driven by Caitlin E. Hummer, 16, rural Salamonia.
Hits pole
Road conditions were blamed for a one-vehicle accident about 8 a.m. Wednesday on county road 200 West near Indiana 26.
Mitchell A. Murphy, 53, rural Bryant, told the Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was southbound on 200 West, north of Indiana 26, when he lost control of his 2000 Ford F25 pick-up on the icy pavement. The truck went off the east side of the road and struck a pole.
Damage was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
Tire blows
A left front tire blew on a semi about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday on Indiana 67 near county road 700 East in Wabash Township.
Matthew T. Murphy, 28, Fort Wayne, was eastbound on Indiana 67 when the tire blew on the 2007 Volvo he was driving, causing him to go off the north side of the highway and into a ditch where the trailer rolled over.
Damage to the semi, registered to Alpha Leasing LLC of Fort Wayne, was estimated between $25,000 and $50,000.
