FAIRMOUNT — The Patriot girls showed they were the best team.
The boys nearly did the same.
Jay County High School’s girls track team finished first Friday at the Madison-Grant Argyll Relays, while the boys were runner-up.
The Patriot girls totaled 144 points, leaving runner-up Mississinewa far behind with 83 points. Elwood scored 64 for third.
Mississinewa won the boys meet with 98.5 points, and Jay County had 79 for second, edging the host school by two points.
Individuals winning their respective events were Breea Liette (100-meter hurdles 17.17 seconds), Kendal Garringer (high jump – 4 feet, 10 inches), Lucy Laux (long jump – 15 feet, 11 inches) and Taylor Muhlenkamp (discus – 94 feet, 1 inch).
Kendra Muhlenkamp joined Sophia Fugiett, Gabby Kunkler and Garringer to win the 4x800 relay in 10 minutes, 37 seconds, then teamed with Grace Saxman, Renee Omstead and Ashlyn Dow for a first-place finish in the 4x400 relay in 4:31.
The 800 sprint medley of Kinsey Shannon, Laux, Omstead and Dow won in 1:57, while the 4x100 shuttle hurdle relay team comprised of Abby Benter, Sara Hemmelgarn, Saxman and Liette was also first in 1:08.
Jay County’s 4x100 relay squad of Karlie Bullard, Calli Stigleman, Liette and Laux also got a victory with their time of 52.63 seconds.
For the boys, Gavin Randall had a season-best height of 6 feet, 3 inches, to win high jump. The 4x110 shuttle hurdle relay team of Isaac Robbins, Skyler Myers, Matthew Paquette and Noah Harris also finished first.
