Tuesday is decision day for Indiana voters.
While the Democrat side of the primary ballot in Jay County is mostly devoid of contested races, Jay County Republicans face choices for their party’s nominations for U.S. Senate, state senate, state representative, commissioner, council and sheriff, among others.
The only contested race open to voting for all Jay County Democrats is for the nomination of U.S. representative. Redkey voters will also choose from four candidates for town council.
Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The GOP races for commissioner and sheriff highlight the local ballot.
All three candidates for the middle district county commissioner seat are seeking election for the first time. Incumbent Barry Hudson was chosen by a Republican caucus to take over the seat about a year ago following Doug Inman’s resignation. He is facing challenges from Chad Aker and Calub Lutes.
For sheriff, Republicans must choose between the two men who have combined to hold the office for the last 12 years. Incumbent Dwane Ford is seeking re-election to a second term in a race against Ray Newton, who served from 2007 through 2015 and was unable to run for a third consecutive term because of term limits.
For the county council district two seat, a pair of candidates are seeking to replace Bob Vance, who decided not to run for another term. That race pits Amy Runyon Barrett against Harold Towell.
Also at the county level, Republicans Robin Alberson and Cherrie Geesaman are running for assessor. Diana Stults decided not to seek a third term in office.

In state level races, incumbent Republican Travis Holdman is hoping to extend his 10-year tenure in the senate as he faces a challenge from Berne’s Eric Orr. And for the District 33 representative seat, Jenae Horn Blasdel of rural Jay County and John “J.D.” Prescott of rural Union City are seeking the nomination in their first run for office. (Incumbent Republican Greg Beumer chose not to run.)
For the GOP U.S. Senate nomination, the race involves Mike Braun, Luke Messer and Todd Rokita.
For Democrats, the highest level contested race is for the nomination for the U.S. House of Representatives. Ballot regulars Tommy Schrader and John Roberson are running again in a three-candidate race against Courtney Tritch.
Locally, the only contested Democrat race above the township level is for nominations for Redkey Town Council. Two candidates from the group of incumbent Charles “Red” Coons, former council members Terri D. Taylor and James “Watermellon Jim” Phillips, and Nathan Cole will advance to the general election.
Other contested races on the Democrat ballot are: James B. Isenhart and Nancy Cline for Greene Township Trustee; and Crystal E. Laux and Katina L. Miller for Bearcreek Township Trustee.
