Correction
A Capsule Report about an accident and arrest in Friday’s edition of The Commercial Review contained incorrect information.
Michael E. Reagan, 18, 325 W. 9th St., Portland, was facing east on Race Street in a 2008 Chevrolet Express van and began to back up Wednesday. Daniela Nieto, 19, Portland, was in her vehicle behind the van. She told Portland police she tried to back up to avoid the van striking her vehicle and also honked her horn in an effort to get the other driver’s attention.
Nieto said the van hit her 2013 Chevrolet Cruze. She said she confronted the driver, who she recognized as Reagan, and he then left the scene of the collision heading east on Race Street.
A separate Portland Police Department report indicates that just minutes later Reagan was driving a different vehicle — a 2008 BMW — east on Race Street between Grand and Williams streets at a high rate of speed. The report says the BMW first struck a parked 2008 Honda Accord, registered to Rebecca A. Chandler, Portland, and pushed it into a yard and then struck a 2016 Chevrolet Cruz, registered to Heather M. Groh, Portland, before spinning and coming to a stop on Race Street.
The police report says Reagan said he did not realize he hit the Cruze with the van and left the scene because he got scared.
The van Reagan was driving is registered to Rafael R. Gonzalez, Fort Recovery. The BMW he was driving is registered to Armando M. Rodriquez, Portland.
Reagan was arrested on the preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class A misdemeanor, failure to stop after an accident and reckless driving, Class B misdemeanors, and minor consumption of alcohol, a Class C misdemeanor.
He was booked at 11 p.m. into Jay County Jail and was later released on a $1,500 bond.
Damage in the initial backing collision with the van is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500. Damage in the subsequent collisions involving the BMW was estimated between $25,000 and $50,000.
