MUNCIE — Gavin Randall’s career-best in the high jump sits at 6 feet, 3 inches, but 5 feet, 10 inches, was all he needed to earn an individual regional qualification Thursday night in the IHSAA Boys Track and Field Sectional at Muncie Central.
Randall, a Jay County High School junior, will have another chance to break his best mark when he competes at regional May 24 at North Central.
Although he didn’t qualify for regional in long jump, Randall set a career-best by nearly a foot in the event with a distance of 19 feet, 7 inches, which placed eighth in long jump finals after being seeded second in his flight with a previous best distance of 18 feet, 4 inches.
“It means a lot,” said Randall, who was third in high jump. Kyle Wills of Delta won with a height of 6 feet, 2 inches. “Getting second in conference was kind of a blow, so it means a lot to make it to regional. I felt great coming into today, especially after setting a PR in long jump.”
JCHS coach Kurt Hess has noticed steady improvement from Randall’s mechanics, which led to results.
“About halfway through the season his form — his technique — has really helped him,” Hess said. “A couple guys in the past have been able to jump pretty high, but their form kind of stops them from getting any higher.”
Delta won the team championship with 112 points, defeating Yorktown by two points and host Muncie Central by four. Jay County finished ninth out of 10 teams.
Randall topped off his performance by helping earn the team a point with an eighth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay, which he ran with Matthew Paquette, Noah Harris and Isaac Robbins. Randall played a part in eight of Jay County’s 19 total points. He and the rest of the relay were able to shave slightly more than five seconds off its seed time, finishing in 3:51.63.
Hess was still pleased with the way his team competed throughout the night.
“Individually, we’re pretty happy with the times and the results our guys gave,” Hess said. “Just tough competition.”
Jay County’s highest finishes after Randall’s high jump came from Isaac Robbins and Harris, both of whom are juniors. They were sixth and seventh place respectively in the 300 hurdles with times of 44.35 and 44.71 seconds.
Robbins’ time of 44.35 was an even four seconds away from Yorktown’s Austin Hill, who earned the final regional qualifying spot with a time of 40.35.
The junior trio of Skyler Myers, Candler Hedges and Tayler Smeltzer, and senior Alex LeMaster, placed sixth in the 4x800 relay with a time of 9:46.07.
Monroe Central’s Nick Mitchell won the 300 dash final with a time of 39.68, and Yorktown won the 4x800 relay.
“For the most part, we peaked at the right time,” Hess said. “But hopefully not Gavin. Hopefully he peaks next week. Looking forward to it.”
Robbins was seventh in 110 hurdles and Myers was eighth in the 3,200 run to also score points for Jay County.
