Fraud
A Portland woman lost thousands of dollars in an apparent fraud.
The woman told Portland Police Department her computer had crashed and someone called asking for money to fix it. The next day, the computer crashed again and the same person wanted more money to fix it, which the woman sent. The person then asked for the woman’s bank account information to repay the money, then sent her $5,000 and asked her to buy gift cards and mail them. While she was buying the gift cards, she was warned that she was participating in a scam. After she refused to mail the gift cards, $76,000 was wired from her bank account.
Police are still investigating the incident.
