Airport to get door for hangar

An airplane hangar at Portland Municipal Airport will get a new door soon. 

And while its final selection wasn’t the cheapest, Portland Board of Aviation selected the bid it considered the most inclusive. 

The aviation board met Wednesday with only one item on its agenda. 

Board members considered three bids to replace a 50-foot wide, 16-foot high door on hangar 20. The least expensive bid was from Hi-Fold Door Corporation in Wisconsin, for $12,633.08. Schweiss Doors in Minnesota bid $12,975 to replace the door. A third bid from PowerLift Hydraulic Doors Great Lakes in Venedocia, Ohio, came in at $20,157. 

The difference between the first two bids and PowerLift’s is that the latter bid included manufacturing, delivery, removing the old door and the installation of the new door. Delivery costs were included in the bids from Schweiss and Hi-Fold, but the board would have to hire a third party to install the doors and remove the old one.

“Of all these doors that we’ve got a quote from, there’s only one of them that is built, installed, guaranteed by one person,” board president John Lyons said. “The rest of them … they bring in a pile of material and you hire a contractor to put it together.  PowerLift is a prefab door, they bring it to the site, they install it and if we have problems, contact them.” 

Scott Klausing from PowerLift was at the meeting on Wednesday and said there shouldn’t be any issues with getting a new door installed quickly. He told the board he could have a new door manufactured and installed by the end of next week. 

“It’s all very feasible, it’s just what you have is pretty, well, seen its better day,” Klausing said. 

Board members Dick Baldauf, Mitch Sutton and Lyons, absent Faron Parr, ultimately selected PowerLift’s bid.
