LIBERTY — The Jay County High School volleyball team closed the regular season Saturday by going 1-3 in the Union County Invitational.
The Patriots (21-9) dropped the tournament opener to Adams Central (25-21, 25-22) before sweeping Shenandoah (25-15, 25-17). Jay County then lost matches to Alexandria (16-25, 25-19, 15-11) and East Central (25-19, 25-21).
Natalie Miles led the Patriot offense by totaling 24 kills for the tournament. Hallie Fields and Olivia Kunkler were second with 13 kills apiece, while Sara Hemmelgarn and Alana Kunkler contributed 10 kills each.
Defensively, Alana Kunkler totaled 11 blocks, while sister Olivia was second with nine kills. Maggie Pryor collected 32 digs, Randi Ferguson recorded 27 digs and Kailee Denney contributed 25 digs while leading the squad with 34 assists.
Chiefs place third
The East Jay Middle School seventh grade volleyball team placed third Saturday in the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament at Jay County.
East Jay’s eighth graders were fourth.
The seventh grade Chiefs (15-8) beat Bluffton (25-4, 25-6) and Southern Wells (25-16, 25-16) before losing to South Adams (25-19, 25-19) in pool play. They knocked off West Jay (25-18, 25-10) in their crossover match.
Sophie Saxman led the team with 10 kills. Maggie Dillon posted team highs in both aces (23) and service points (47).
East Jay’s eighth graders defeated Heritage (25-14, 25-12) and Southern Wells (25-16, 25-15) before falling to South Adams (25-13, 25-13). In their crossover match, the Chiefs lost to Adams Central 25-21, 25-14.
Renna Schwieterman’s 12 kills led the Chiefs (9-13). Kylee Carreno finished with 10 aces on her way to 21 service points.
