Capsule Reports

Failure to yield 

Two vehicles collided Thursday afternoon in front of Walmart when one driver failed to yield. 

Lisa M. Sheward, 47, Portland, was attempting to drive north from the store’s parking lot at 950 W. Votaw St. out of its outlet onto Votaw Street. She told Portland Police Department she didn’t see anyone coming and drove her 2015 Jeep Renegade into the road. Her car was then struck by Corina E. Treon, who was driving her 2015 Dodge Caravan west on Votaw Street. Treon, 27, Portland, said Sheward pulled out in front of her and she was unable to avoid the collision. 

A 9-year-old passenger in Treon’s car complained of stomach pain but refused medical treatment at the scene.

Damage in the 4:40 p.m. collision is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000. 



Failure to yield 

A Ridgeville teen and a Muncie man were involved in a vehicle collision Thursday morning. 

Mason P. Winner, 17, was driving north on Depot Street and stopped at its intersection with Votaw Street. He told Portland Police Department he looked both ways, didn’t see any other cars and drove into the intersection. The 2009 Chevrolet 3K2 he was driving was then struck by Eric A. Harrell’s car. Harrell, 58, was driving his 2006 Ford Escape east on Votaw Street.

The pickup truck Winner was driving is registered to Jonathan W. Winner, Ridgeville. 

Damage in the 7:58 a.m. accident is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000. 



Deer struck 

A Portland man’s truck sustained an estimated $1,000 to $2,500 in damage when he struck a deer Thursday morning. 

Jason R. Thobe, 36, was driving his 2006 Chevrolet 1500 east on Division Road near its intersection with county road 300 East when a deer jumped into the roadway. He told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was unable to avoid hitting it. 

The accident occurred at 7:15 a.m. 



Vandalism 

A Portland man reported vandalism to his tractor Thursday. 

Jim Lochtefeld told Jay County Sheriff’s Office someone had loosened the bolts on his tractor’s oil pan, causing the motor to lock up when he drove it. 



Burglary 

A house where Portland Police Department had previously conducted a search warrant was broken into early Wednesday morning. 

Police arrested five people at 914 W. Race St. on Tuesday and locked up the house. Around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, police drove past the residence and saw that the front door was open. When officers went inside, an unknown person ran out the back door. The officers ran after the person but were unable to locate him or her.
