Strong in the second
Patriots score 27 points in second quarter and 41 straight to grab 51-19 win over Raiders
The opening drive didn’t go as planned.
The offense had to punt, and the defense gave up a touchdown to the Raiders.
Apparently the Patriots just needed to get to the second quarter.
Ryan Schlechty took the first play of the second quarter 54 yards for a touchdown to kickstart a 27-point frame and a stretch of 41 straight points for the Jay County High School football team as it throttled the Southern Wells Raiders 51-19 in the conference opener for both teams.
“It was a great confidence booster for us,” said JCHS senior Michael Schlechty, who bruised his way for 63 yards and three touchdowns on just six carries. “The momentum really shifted our way. We knew once we put a bunch of points up we knew we had them.
“They were done.”
Jay County (2-1, 1-0 Allen County Athletic Conference) recovered a fumble on the kickoff after Ryan Schlechty’s touchdown. Then Michael Schlechty capped a seven play drive that covered 60 yards by punching it in from the 2 yard line.
On the next possession for Southern Wells (1-2, 0-1 ACAC) with the Raiders at the JC 13, quarterback Jeb Perry ran an option play to the left. He pitched the ball to Josh Beeks, but Noah Harris swatted the ball away. The JCHS junior picked it up at the 25 yard line and ran down the Patriot sideline to paydirt.
“He did a great job getting his hand in the pitching lane, and we were able to score,” said JCHS coach Tim Millspaugh.
Moments before half, Parker Grimes threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Trey Castillo to put the Patriots out front 27-6 heading into intermission.

Moments before half, Parker Grimes threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Trey Castillo to put the Patriots out front 27-6 heading into intermission.
“To be able to go down and score at half, that is huge,” Millspaugh said. “You have got to be able to put that thing in (the end zone) because that’s a different ball game coming out in the third quarter.
“I am very pleased with how we played in the second quarter.”
But the Patriots didn’t stop scoring.
Michael Schlechty, who led the team defensively with 10 tackles, scored rushing TDs of 25 and 2 yards respectively to push Jay County’s lead to 41-6 midway through the quarter.
The Schlechty twins combined for 171 rushing yards and four total touchdowns. Defensively they racked up 19 tackles, four of which were in the backfield.
“Every week those guys are such a valuable and important part of our football team,” said Millspaugh, whose team travels to take on Adams Central on Friday. “The beauty of that is that’s just not our expectation. That’s their expectation. They want to dominate every time they’re on the field, and they’ve got themselves in condition to be able to do that.”
Parker Grimes was effective once again through the air, completing eight of his 13 pass attempts for 145 yards and the TD toss to Castillo. He almost had another passing TD in the fourth quarter, but it was called back for holding. Six plays later he ran it in from the 3.
Southern Wells managed to rush for 234 yards, 155 of which came on four plays. During the first quarter, Coleman Beeks broke open a 33-yard run on the second play of the game.
Perry had consecutive 32-yard rushes on consecutive broken plays in the Raiders’ only first-half scoring drive. On the first, he fumbled the snap then broke free around the left side. The second he turned the wrong way for a handoff, and after realizing the running back wasn’t there he took off for positive yardage.
“You have no idea where it’s going to go,” Millspaugh said of the broken plays.
In the third quarter, Perry had a 58-yard TD run on an option pitch that he kept, getting free at midfield and outrunning Jay County’s defense.
“I thought we worked our butts off,” Michael Schlechty said of the defense. “There were a few miscues but we cleaned it up. We made some big plays tonight.”
