Rain halts tennis, soccer

Jay boys tennis and boys soccer postponed, girls soccer ends in draw

Scott Miller is facing the same frustrations more reserved for the coach of a spring sports team.

He’s spent more time leading practice than leading his athletes in competition.

Thursday added to his problem.

Less than 45 minutes into the match against the Bluffton Tigers on Thursday, the sky opened up and poured down rain, forcing the cancelation of the Jay County High School boys tennis team’s competition against the Bluffton Tigers.

“It’s been frustrating to stand out in the rain as many times as I have this year, have my shoes wet as many times as I have this year but it is what it is,” said Miller, whose team is 2-2 on the year and has had five matches either canceled or postponed. “Can’t do anything about it.”

Jay County’s girls and boys soccer teams also had the inclement weather disrupt their games Thursday.

Because Bluffton is an Allen County Athletic Conference opponent, the tennis match will be continued at a later date. The cancelation of the match nixed the planned festivities for senior night, but the four seniors will receive their recognition following Thursday’s match against Winchester.

The No. 1 doubles match was the only one that had been completed, as Jay County senior Xavier Ninde and junior Sheldon Upp fell to Gabe Eisenhunt and Mason Heller 6-0, 6-0.

Jay County was behind the 8-ball in the other four matches, too. At No. 1 singles, Conner Benter trailed Landon McClish 2-0 in the second set after dropping the first 6-1.

Gabe Blankenship was behind Jarrett Phillippe 1-0 in the second set. Phillippe won the first, 6-2.

At No. 3 singles, JCHS freshman Crosby Heniser lost the first set to Tanner Cooley, but a score was not immediately available.

The No. 2 doubles team of Gavin Randall and Christian Romero lost the first set to Noah Christal and Spencer Schwartz 6-0.

Across the parking lot at the soccer field, Jay County’s girls soccer team was deep in the first half with Oak Hill when it started to rain. They played through the downpour — the second time this season the Patriots had to put up with rain during a home game — to a scoreless first half.

Knowing rain and thunderstorms were likely to continue for most of the evening, coaches Giles Laux (Jay County) and Katie Durrwachter (Oak Hill) agreed to call the game a draw.

The Patriots are now 5-2-1 on the year.

Meanwhile, in Hartford City, Jay County’s boys soccer team was leading the host Blackford Bruins 1-0 late in the first half when the game was postponed.

Korbin Auker scored a goal on an assist by Ian McCombs to put the Patriots (1-4) ahead.

Jay County and Blackford attempted to wait out the rain, but called the game off around 6:30 p.m. with 6 minutes, 43 seconds remaining before halftime.

Blackford athletics director Tony Uggen tweeted 2.5 inches of rain fell an hour at the Bruin football field. He also said the game will be resumed at 5 p.m. Sept. 17.

The constant canceling and postponements of tennis matches has forced Miller to be somewhat innovative to keep the practices more lively.

“Basically the practices are just getting to be repetitive,” he said, noting he has incorporated skill-oriented games. “I’ve been working on ways to keep fresh, do different things in practice to keep from being mundane.”

But it’s becoming more and more challenging.

“We’re to the point in the season where I’m running out of daily ideas, things to do on a regular basis,” he said.
