Meet the candidates
Jay County Chamber of Commerce will hold its meet the candidates night at 6 p.m. Oct. 2 at Arts Place, 131 E. Walnut St., Portland.

Drove off road
A car driven by a Fort Recovery man sustained damage when he drove off the road Sunday morning.
Thomas A. Winchester, 65, was driving east on county road 300 North approaching its intersection with county road 550 East. He told Jay County Sheriff’s Office an unknown vehicle was heading west on county road 300 North in the wrong lane. Winchester drove off the road to avoid hitting the other car, striking a Jay County Highway Department sign before coming back onto the road. The other vehicle never stopped.
Winchester was driving a 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck, registered to Roxann M. Winchester, Fort Recovery.
Damage in the 10:13 a.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 and $5,000.
Failure to yield
Two Geneva residents were involved in a vehicle accident last week in Adams County.
Thursday morning, Braxton Minnich, 18, was driving south on Adams County road 700 South and was approaching its intersection with U.S. 27. He stopped at the stop sign and then proceeded into the intersection, failing to see a car driven by Angela Turner, 27, who was driving south on U.S. 27.
The two vehicles collided, causing an estimated $10,000 to $25,000 in damage.
Drove off road
A Muncie man’s pickup truck was damaged after he drove off the road Saturday morning.
Billie P. Painter Jr., 56, was driving north on Indiana 67 approaching its intersection with county road 700 South. He went off the east side of the road, striking a guard rail and entering a steep ditch and high water before coming to rest in the bed of Halfway Creek.
Damage to his 1979 Chevrolet Cheyenne pickup truck is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
The accident occurred at 6:45 a.m.
Door damaged
A Portland woman reported damage to her door and apartment Monday night.
Angela M. Gray, who lives in the west 500 block of Walnut Street, told Portland Police Department when she came home Monday she saw that her back door had been kicked in. There was also damage to her bedroom ceiling. Nothing was taken from the apartment.
Low visibility crash
A Portland woman and a Modoc man were involved in a vehicle accident in foggy conditions Tuesday morning.
Aaron M. Slater, 30, Modoc, was driving north on Indiana 1 and was stopped at its intersection with Indiana 67. He told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he looked both ways and didn’t see anyone, so proceeded to drive into the intersection. Kathleen E. Wood, 57, Portland, who was driving her 2011 Nissan Rogue west on Indiana 67, collided with the Sierra. She said she didn’t see Slater before the vehicles collided.
Slater was driving a 2016 General Motors Sierra registered to Stoney Creek Veterinary, Farmland.
At the time of the accident, there was a fog advisory in place and low visibility.
Damage in the 6:30 a.m. collision is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.
