Election day isn’t until November, but local voters will soon be able to start making their selections.
Early voting is just a couple of weeks away — it starts Oct. 10 — and ballots in Jay County will feature races for county commissioner and Jay School Board.
The commissioners race is a family affair as cousins Brian and Chad Aker square off to represent the middle district. Chad Aker defeated incumbent Barry Hudson and Caleb Lutes in the Republican primary while Brian Aker ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.
There are a pair of contested races for Jay School Board, including a three-way battle for the District 3 seat. Incumbent Beth Krieg, who is seeking her third term, is facing challenges from Donna Geesaman and P.J. Corwin.
In District 1, Cory Gundrum is hoping to earn a second term as he is up against a challenge from Chris Snow.
All school board seats are voted on by the entire county, but candidates must live in the district they represent.
The other contested race for a county-level office is for recorder as incumbent Republican Betty St. Myers faces a challenge from Democrat Dominic M. Martyne. St. Myers was unopposed in the Republican primary while Martyne filed following the primaries as there was no Democrat on the ballot.
There is also a contested race for Redkey Town Council, with four candidates seeking two seats that are up for election. Running in that race are incumbents Republican Charles “Red” Coons and independent Mike Wright and challengers Republican Randy J. May and Terri D. Taylor.
There is a long list of state and federal offices with contested elections as well, led by the battle between incumbent Democrat Joe Donnelly and Republican Mike Braun for the U.S. Senate. Lucy M. Brenton, a Libertarian, is also running for the office.
